A Guide to Coordinating Outdoor Rugs & Fabrics

This post is about coordinating outdoor rugs and fabrics was last updated June 2023.

Outdoor Rugs and FabricsAs soon as the frost melts and the weather warms up, it’s time to take the home decorating ventures outdoors.

Why not make the most of the season by moving your family room outdoors? Create a cool & comfortable setting for family and friends to talk, eat, and sit a spell by coordinating your outdoor rug and fabrics.

No matter how large or small your outdoor area may be, you can create the perfect retreat to enjoy all year long — or at least until the first snow falls.

We like to start with mixing in color and texture. It can be as simple as adding a pretty planter and a couple of pillows to a bench, porch swing or rocker. But if you have the space, why not go all out with a rug and curtains, too? It makes all the difference.

For inspiration, we’ve pulled together a few of our favorite looks this season to help guide you in creating your perfect outdoor room.

Restful NeutralOutdoor Rug and Fabrics

More tips for successful outdoor decorating:

  • Define seating and dining areas with a rug.
  • Use cushions and throw pillows to add color and create comfortable seating.
  • Consider hanging curtains to define an area, add shade and create privacy.
  • Use all-weather fabrics for durability, fade-resistance and waterproofing.
  • If you have a large porch, arrange seating into intimate, conversational groups.
  • Add personality by accessorizing your space — lanterns, statuary, planters, birdcages, mirrors and candles are all great ideas.
  • Add interest with texture, such as wicker, woven rugs, ceramic garden stool, woven baskets, terra cotta planters, wood pieces, pillows, etc.
  • During periods when you’re not using your porch, store cushions and pillows to keep them in good condition.

Hello, we just built a roof over our deck at our A-frame. I want to use red cushions for some pop against the black table and chair set. What color rug should I use? The interior is more rustic industrial using red curtains for pop. Definitely not country at all.

I want cabana stripe cushions for my white, wicker rockers. Our overall color palette is browns and blacks and warmer tones — but I’m worried the black and sand will look too flat/dirty against the white wicker and that the black and white (which I know is more of an ivory) will have a better overall look. Any advice? I am looking for a classic, clean look overall.

I have a long, narrow three-season sunroom. I have a chaise and rocking chair in one area, and would like to place Capri chairs to create a second seating area. Should I put matching rugs in both areas, or can I mix as long as they are the same size and palette? (I’m thinking the Marina in Mocha and the Chevron in black/sand–would these coordinate? Or should I just go with two Marinas?) Thanks.

In most cases, mixing different patterned rugs work great if they are in the same palette. In reference to the rugs you mentioned, we recommend pairing the Chevron Stripe – black/sand with the Marina Black … but using two Marina Rugs of the same color is always a safe choice.

Heather: We suggest allowing the colors of your umbrella to be dominant and then add small doses of black and green to the palette. Consider mixing Catana Floral – Chocolate, Newport Stripe Sunbrella, Arden Chocolate and Green with your umbrella. Use these fabrics on cushions and pillows. Add black pillow fringe to the Catana Floral or Green as an echo of the woven chair. Switch out the red cushion for Sunbrella Sand and repeat one of the patterned fabrics for a pillow. Our Turin Brown rug is a good option since it already has a mix of your existing colors.

I need advice on bringing together what I already have, with new items on large concrete slab surrounding inground pool. On one side of patio is glass table/4 brown frame chairs/umberella (with what is causing the problem for me-sand,taupe,brown stripped fabric). On the other side a black woven chair set with sold red cushions. Lastly a wrought iron glider bench, that can be placed on patio or deck. I want to tie the 2 or 3 spaces together! Would like color and other patterns.

Hi, I need help with my outdoor deck decoration. I have just received two canvas rust lounge cushions and two 20 inch square throw pillows in the Soledad rust fabric. I would like to add two outdoor rugs to the deck (one 8×10 and one 5×7) and wonder if you think the St. Tropez sistal with canvas rust border under the main dining table with chairs is the right design choice or whether the St. Tropez outdoor rug with the Nantucket Striped (Rust) border would be better. I also have another seating are that could have an outdoor rug there (5×7). Is it best to get two of the same rugs or to mix them up? I also need a bunch more throw pillows for the chairs…should I mix those up and get plain canvas rust and soledad pattern or should I also bring in the nantucket stripe in rust?

I have a large outdoor space with a pool and a large wood arbor with a dining area in it with cream seat cushions. I also have another seating area with tan cushions. My chaise cushions on one side of pool are natural and I need to find 2 more chaise cushions for the other side of the pool. I am all over the map! I would like to coordinate all areas. Currently my colors are browns and creams. I love the spa color but also looking for a european/french flair. Is there a fabric that coordinates with spa with maybe a little green that has a euro flair? or what do you suggest to coordinate so many areas?

      Gigi,
A simple rule of thumb when mixing fabrics is to use a pattern, a geometric and solids. We think adding spa to your existing colors would be “fabuleux”! Try using Brown and Sand Canopy Stripe with Arden Blue for your current palette. For a different approach, start with Seneca Stripe to give you the spa color along with a soft green. Was thinking about the tuscan vine as two back pillows and brass for the seat cushion on the loveseat. Would the green fabric and green leopard fabric look good with those fabrics? Am trying to stay in the neutrals.

Shelley: Try blending the colors and maybe add a “pop” of an outdoor color to coordinate. SWay your color scheme is Tuscan in feel – adding a pop of sunny yellow or acid green will make the color scheme come alive. Keeping the colors coordinated helps the flow from indoors to outdoors.

I am furnishing a sunroom with white walls, a soft gray carpet, and windows on three sides to bring in the bright green yard. What would you suggest?

I have the Arden Blue fabric on a daybed and am hoping to pull in some extra color with something like the Sanibel floral for pillows or drapes. What rugs would you recommend without it being too “matchy?” I was wondering if something like the brown Leopard would work?

I am looking to pair some of the black/cream pillows with another fabric pattern. Walls are a creamy lighter green.

Thanks for the color group suggestions. I like the presentation -it’s very helpful to see the layers of texture and color. Also, this is a good way for folks to create their own home scrapbooks in either digital or hardcopy. Since first becoming a home owner, I’ve created a scrapbook book per home and keep it in my car. This provides an easy reference when I come across a “find”. On my phone, I store interior and exterior photos of my home. It minimizes guessing and really saves time and resources. I look forward to the next stylestudio email.

My comment was looking for sample rooms using a printed cushion, instead of solids as displayed in this article. I.e., matching an outdoor rug, etc., to the printed cushions.

I moved into a new house and need to pull the outdoor area together. I have a brown umbrella and brown chairs. But my deck is one of those “all purpose” decks and made of a washed out red/rust/maroon floor and light gray sides. The side slats are topped off again with the washed out red/rust/maroon color as a railing. My husband does a want to change this deck and I don’t think we will change the color. I think the seascape setting will be too matchy with the side slats. What color combo would you recommend? Help!

I note that all cushions in your sample rooms are covered with solid fabrics, rather then patterned. I tend to stay away from solid fabrics as they show soil and dirt instantly, and cleaning a soiled area sometimes makes the stain appear worse. I’d like to see suggestions for a patterned cushion i.e., stripes, floral, geometric; to see what rugs etc., make the outdoor space pop.

Carol: Our cushions come in a wide variety of solids, prints and stripes. If you go online click Outdoor Living Tab on top then go to Outdoor Cushions and click onto the type cushion you want – then look in the lower right which will have a box called select color and you can click onto any of the prints. Hope this information helps!

Excellent! Just what I needed to finish off my front porch. I have a white swing on a reddish brick porch and this will help me pick out material that will blend with what I have. Thank you!

I love the idea of coordinating textures and colors, not matchy-matchy. My dilemma is what color combination to use! My house is yellow, white porch and a *gasp* green roof….. I think I almost have to go with black/white. Back to shop!

Teresa: You are not limited to just black and white – throw some green Ikat Medallion Pillows in the mix. Or you can Pick the Earthy Escape Combo, or Simple and Sophisticated and even our Mediterranean Flair. Any of these combinations work!

Have 8″x20″ bolsters for which I wish to find new covers. Do you offer this size option in pre-made bolster covers?

I already have brown chair covers and umbrella. I would like to bring in the Tuscan stripe on a metal bench. What fabric would look best to go with the stripe? Thanks.

Cathy: Our Tuscan Vine coordinates with the Tuscan Stripe. You can always add “pops” of color with our Rust and Brass fabrics.

It would be helpful to be able to add fabrics and rug colors to a predesigned room with patio furniture to see how different options would look together. Do you currently have that and I’m not seeing it?

Melanie: We decided to put the fabrics and rug together without placing them on furniture because we wanted everyone to see the combinations of fabrics that work on any furniture you may have now. If you like solid fabric for cushions with printed pillows – you have the combinations ready to choose or you could do patterned cushions with solid pillows. The choice is up to you. If you work within any of the combinations – you can’t make a mistake. We do hope this explains our theory.
