Decorating Dilemmas is a weekly column in which our stylists answer your design questions, so you can tackle your home decorating project with complete confidence.

Dear How to Decorate,

Hi there, I have NO decorating sense at all and really need your help.

We are turning our main bathroom into a ½ bath and building a master bath. My dilemma is with the ½ bath. It is long and narrow; 10 feet long by 4 feet wide. As you can see from the picture it looks like a very narrow alley. What can be done to make it look more square or not so narrow?

Thanks for your help,
Mary from NJ

Hi Mary,

Thanks for your email. Your bath has a lot of potential.

Tip #1 would be to get everything in there the same color – that will distract from the narrowness of the room and make it feel like one cohesive space.

If you’re not going to be replacing the tile, paint the wall, window trim and cabinet to match it. If you’re planning to rip things out, replace everything with items of the same (or similar) color. A pretty white pedestal sink with white subway tile and a black and white tile floor would be gorgeous. You can add pops of color with towels and a mat or rug.

Good luck!! Send us photos of your finished product. We’d love to see it.
