Mixing Patterned Furniture And Rugs?

Bryn Mawr fabric

Dear Style Studio team,

Wondering what your thoughts are on mixing patterned furniture with a patterned (oriental style) rug.

Specifically thinking of an ottoman over such a rug, alongside solid colored couch and chairs.

Our couch and chairs are subtle solids (faded green/turquoise couch and oatmeal chairs) and for what it’s worth, all of this is in a small living room (5-by-8-foot rug). The rug is neutral colors (light turquoise, light tan and a bit of a rust color), matching the couch and chairs.

If you care to get specific as to patterns you carry for your ottomans, we’d welcome the advice!

Thx,

Joe and Nikki

Dear Joe and Nikki,

We love the idea of mixing patterns!

It sounds like you have a wonderful color scheme. Try picking a pattern that has shades of turquoise, tan and rust in it.

Bryn Mawr fabricWithout seeing the rug, we did choose a couple of samples for you to look at: our Bryn Mawr fabric (pictured right) and our Chenille Desert or the combination of Chandra Celadon with Suzanne Kasler’s Mandarin Linen.

We always recommend that you order swatches of the materials before you order them.

Happy Decorating!

Hi, I ordered the banquette in Ellie Snow and my walls are a Benjamin Moore Revere Pewter, chairs distressed black ladder back style, and the table is round with a black base and brown stained top……I don’t have any idea what color of area rug to buy. I welcome all suggestions.

    Thank you.

      Doris,
Since your room is mostly neutral — whites, blacks, and greige — I think you could go lots of different directions with your rug. It all depends on what vibe you want to create. Do you want add color? Or do you want to stay more neutral?
With what you’ve described, I would choose something with both grays, whites, and tans, like our Sumter Rug or Suzanne Kasler’s Emilyn Rug. Both have a neutral palette, won’t compete with the pattern of our Ellie Snow fabric, and have a luxe sheen to them that will work well in a dining area.
      Best of luck,
      Caroline
