Tall Ceilings

Hi Style Sudio Team!

We are first time home owners who fell in love with this 19 foot tall ceiling living room. This room is the reason why we bought the house in the first place. But once we were in it we realized we had so much space than we knew to do it. The room is been like this for months. We can’t even decide on a paint color.031113_ss_resize_08

Our main dilemmas are:

– What do do with so much upward space. ( we wanted to add an electric fireplace with a mantle but I’m afraid it will look out of place with such high ceilings)

– what kind of furniture ( We like Hollywood regency and frech country styles, can we match the two?)

-the checkered floors (what kind of rug can we use that would make the whole look come together)
– the color, fabric and size of the drapes (we would like the room to feel airy and not so traditional)
-two ackward columns in the middle of the room (do we hang art or place furniture in front of them?)
The size of the room is 17×22.
I know is a lot but I’m truly hoping you can get us out of design purgatory LOL. Thank you so much for taking the time to read our request!

Ivet,

Your room appears to have such beautiful light flooding through the windows.  What a bonus!

To answer your question concerning mixing styles, we always encourage selecting pieces that speak to your soul.  When you follow your heart, most of the time style will follow.  Although Hollywood Regency and French Country have similar lines, Hollywood Regency shows off reflective surfaces while French Country is more organic in feel.  Your space could be styled to pull the best elements of both styles.

We have attached a simple drawing of how you could treat your front door with light filtering drapery panels like our Concorde Medallion Panels.  Then top your door with our  Grande Bouquet Plaque to finish off your tall wall.  Stacking large wall objects will always bring your over-sized room down to size.  For a rug suggestion, we recommend the Hadley Rug.  The pattern of this choice will provide interest but not compete with your floor tile.   To pull your room together for a cohesive look, we suggest adding a Vintage Voque sofa flanked by a couple of comfortable chairs.  Don’t be afraid to place furniture in unexpected areas of a room, just be mindful of where you will naturally walk through a space.

In regard to your paint color, our team recommends to go with a soft neutral since you have lots of walls with an open floor plan.  We suggest Benjamin Moore OC-49 Titanium.  You need a color that will work with your soft grey tiles and warm textiles. Keep in mind to always paint a test spot so you can see how the lighting plays with the color.  Ultimately, it is worth the extra bit of time to test your color.

Happy Decorating!
