Decorating An Empty Living Room

Dear Style Studio,

I need ideas for decorating and furnishing an empty living or gathering room.

The room size is 20-by-20. It has dark bamboo floors. The walls are a champagne color with a sage colored accent wall with medium oak trimmed fireplace.

We have purchased a leather sofa and recliner chair (deep mahogany color). We also have a large coffee table and two side tables (a blend of medium and dark wood grain).

We could use your help with suggested palates, additional pieces of furniture, fabric or leather? I also need ideas for accents pieces, rug, wall art and curtain design.

Hi Kathy,

You have a good start to a fantastic room. With some additional pieces of furniture, a fabulous rug and a handful of striking accessories, you will have stunning results!

Most great rooms start with a rug and we recommend our Maura Rug in a 10′ x 14′ to fill you room. This rug has beautiful colors that will draw together the different finishes in your space.

As you can see from our layout below, we are suggesting a few additional furniture pieces for your room.

The piece that we have recommended that is to the left of the fireplace is our exquisite Josephina Wall Unit in Distressed Glazed Sage. This piece will set the tone for your area. Enjoy your evenings by the fireplace sitting in two Thurston Chairs upholstered in Celery Twill. Toss pillows on your sofa and three chairs to provide comfort for Sunday afternoon naps. We chose the following fabrics for the pillows:  Velvet Leaf, Ashford Paisley and Document Chocolate.

For side tables, consider our Terrific Trio in Burlap to the right of your sofa and the Olivia Side Table nestled next to your leather chair. Also, try placing a sofa table or slim chest behind the sofa for additional storage. Several places in your room are perfect for lamps. The ever classic Anna Table lamp is one great option and we suggest our Charlotte Floor Lamp perched behind your existing leather chair.

Your expansive wall to the right of your fireplace is screaming for large scaled pieces,  so we recommend stacking at least 2 Diamante Mirrors. For the final gem in your gathering room, our Winter Gold II Giclee will highlight your mantle and enhance the color palette of the room.

We suggest simple drapery panels installed, on a decorative rod, a few inches above the window frame. Since your windows are tall and slim, remember to ease the panels off the glass to the left and right. This installation secret will create the illusion of wider windows.

Investing in a few additional furniture pieces, along with a collage of stunning accessories, will complete your room for both functionality and beauty! We look forward to seeing the “after” photos – so make sure you send us some!!

Happy Decorating!
