Decorating A Small Home Office

Dear Style Studio,

I have an entry that is also used as a home office. It measures 7-and-a-half feet by 12 feet.

I have been looking at the Suzanne Kasler Ikat Indoor/Outdoor Rug now for awhile. I love the colors and would like to incorporate them into my room along with the rug. Since it is a small room I am not sure if I should go with the 5-by-8-foot rug or the runner and the 2-by-3-foot rug/s.

I am open to changing the furniture and will be taking down the shelving that was for kids games etc. when they were small. I will also be painting the room.

I would greatly appreciate any suggestions you can make for this room in regards to paint, desk, chair, fabric, file, wall hangings and anything that you think would pull it together.

Thank you,

Paula

Paula,

We are thrilled that you like Suzanne Kasler’s Ikat Rug. We think the colors are fresh and would be a perfect inspiration piece for your home office.

We think the best size for your space would be the 5-by-8-feet. Keeping to one rug will help increase the visual size of your space.

Painting your space is a fabulous idea and you can achieve two different looks depending on what paint color you choose.

For a bold approach, we suggest pulling the turquoise color from the rug for your walls and then painting your trim a nice crisp white.

Now … if this color idea is a bit too bold for your taste then consider a taupe color for softer walls like Temporal Spirit #965 by Benjamin Moore. Again, we think it would freshen your space to paint the trim white.

Replacing your desk with our Home Office desk and hutch in Tuscan Cream would be a fabulous update. We recommend adding our Gramercy Desk Chair in Microfiber Turquoise for a comfortable spot as well as a great pop of color.

We also recommend hanging a Wood Wall Pocket to help with your home office organization. Another idea is to add a Burlap Message Board on the wall for hanging quick reminders.

As a last touch, add our Grand Tour Etagere in solid white, along with a Lotus Garden Seat in turquoise, to the left of the door.

We hope your home office will be comfortable in no time.

Happy Decorating!

I received Suzanne Kasler’s Ikat Rug today and I absolutely love it. I am waiting for the Lotus Garden Seat to arrive and a few swatches of the fabric. I am getting sooo excited. Paint will be done soon and then I will order more of the beautiful pieces from Ballard Designs.. Again- thanks for your suggestions and all of the support.

Thank you for your suggestions. I love all of the ideas that you came up with and will eventually make some purchases. I actually missed the promo to save up to 20% by a few days and I am hoping that you have another one soon. I am starting on the walls and decided to go with the neutral color. I think the chair and the garden seat will be enough pop of color for me. I do have one question: I love the wall hanging that is in the picture but couldn’t find it on the website. Please point me in the right direction… Again- thank your for your help and quick response.. Sincerely, Paula
