Awkward Living Room Needs Decorating Help

Dear Style Studio,

The way my living room is currently set-up causes the walkway from the front door to the kitchen to be the path between the couch and the television, which is kind of annoying when you’re watching TV.

Also, I have always wanted to try a set-up that showcases the large window more.

Keeping with the current layout, I would love ideas for decorating around the small, odd-shaped wall the television is on as well as a recommendation for wall paint color. We attempted a nice grey but it keeps turning out more blue.

With grey walls (my ideal) and the mushroom color couch, how do I make this room more warm with a pop of color?

I added navy blue accent pillows, but I feel like it’s missing something in the color palette.

Thanks for help!

Nora,

We certainly understand the desire to infuse a room with color. We recommend pulling together a palette of yellow, teal and gray for softer color options. The layers of color will give you the lively interest you desire.

To answer your request for a gray paint suggestion, we recommend Worldly Gray SW7043 by Sherwin Williams. Next, replacing your rug as a great way to inject fresh color into your room. We suggest our Cortez Rug in yellow as a first nod to the color palette.

Your sectional is a large part of your room so added throw pillows will play an important roll in your space. We recommend a variety of pillows in Velvet Yellow, Trilby Basketweave Seafoam, Velvet Teal and Newport Stripe.

The corner to the left of your sectional seems to be screaming for a side table so we recommend our 30-inch Olivia Side Table in Antique Brass. Now bring in our Malia Seeded Glass Lamp in amber for an additional color layer to your seating area.

Since the staircase, half wall behind the television is empty, we understand your desire to add accessories to it. We think leaving it blank is the best solution. To create a balanced look on this wall, consider bumping the media cabinet and flat screen to the right a bit so that they are centered horizontally. We also suggest elevating your television screen a bit with a decorative box. If the staircase wall still appears unfinished, consider adding a simple shelf with minimal accessories above the television.

As a final touch of “wow”, we love the idea of switching out your current chandelier with our Coral 5-Light Chandelier. We think doing this will repeat and strengthen the presence of your dining chair finish.

With a few little tweaks, your space will feel finished in no time. We can’t wait to see photos of the results!

Marita: For a relaxed feel, consider the Wool Jute Diamond Rug or our Granada Rug in gold will dress it up. Either direction you take, add pillows and accessories that will pop with color.
