Decorating Dilemmas is a weekly column in which our stylists answer your design questions, so you can tackle your home decorating project with complete confidence.
Dear How to Decorate,
I’m not sure what to put above our fireplace or in our small dining area on the walls.
I’m confused about the scale of art pieces to use and the color scheme given the existing red and brown tones in the house.
Best,
Amna
Amna,
It appears that you have two areas that flow into each other. It is important for your pieces to work together creating one look throughout your space.
Our Fresians Giclee Print is a fabulous art piece that will fit beautifully on your dining room wall. The size and scale will create the perfect focal point without appearing cluttered.
To help bring a sense of harmony to the dining area, we also recommend placing our Alys Rug under your dining table. Since it is made for high traffic areas, it will provide ease of care.
An idea to consider is repeating the accent wall color of your dining area. We suggest doing that by hanging the Red Run Into Me Giclee over the fireplace. Since this wall is tall, we suggest adding a wall plaque above the artwork to take advantage of the vertical space. We think spelling out an inspirational word with our Typesetter Plaques is the perfect solution!
The few pieces we have suggested will bring both of your areas together and create a harmony within the space.
Happy Decorating!

To further fill out the space and bring it all together get matching window treatments for the entire space. In the dining room mount the rod closer to the ceiling and use that as the height for the living room curtains. Consider a tall hutch for the TV to use the vertical space. Replace the corner floor lamp with a table lamp. Finally, add some colorful pillows in several colors/patterns and a throw blanket to the sofa.
