Decorating Dilemmas is a weekly column in which our stylists answer your design questions, so you can tackle your home decorating project with complete confidence.
Dear Style Studio,
We will be installing large plank hardwood flooring in our bedroom and we wanted to paint and get our decor planning done prior.
We have a hallway leading into the bedroom and as you can see we have Ballard furniture. We are not sure how to paint the walls with the tray ceilings and need help with decor and a rug. Right now it just looks frumpy and I know it can be taken up a notch and look fabulous!
Thank you for any advice you can provide.

Lisa,
Freshening up any space is always fun, especially when you are able to include new flooring!
Why not start with a rug for inspiration. We suggest our Tremont Flat Woven Rug as a fabulous option. This rug provides a beautiful color palette.
For the wall color, we recommend staying neutral and remain with the same color up to the last ceiling level in the tray area. Benjamin Moore’s Tapestry Beige (OC-32) is a great option for that job. Now to give highest ceiling level a nice contrast, consider painting it a subtle blue/gray color…like Sherwin Williams’ Samovar Silver (SW6233). This will highlight the unique shape of your tray ceiling without overpowering your ceiling height. As with any new paint color, remember to paint a sample on the wall so you can see how the color works in different light throughout the day.
We suggest keeping your bedding simple but add incredible pillows like our Marrakesh Silk pillow, Ludlow pillow and a pillow in Danish Linen Honey. Bring simple sparks of texture and color into your room for a fresh and updated approach. Another great suggestion – our new Burlap Crewel Trellis Panels…they will fit perfectly into the new plan!
Since the wall space above your headboard is limited, the Suzanne Kasler Sunburst Mirror is a great option to bring light into the space. If you still want art on the wall, then consider hanging a pair of horizontal art pieces above each bedside chest … to compliment a stunning lighting choice…our Luciana Lamp.
Starting with one inspiration piece will easily help a space become a thing of charm and beauty.
Happy Decorating!
