It’s that time of year again. We’re talking about football season and all the food, family and fun that goes with it. When you plan your game-day food and decoration, make sure to include flowers. Katie Morrow from Southern Living shows us some of her favorite ideas for pretty fuss-free game-day flowers.
First and foremost, plan your game-day flower arrangement around your team colors. For a chic look, pick just one of your team’s colors and buy a variety of flowers in that one color, Katie advises. “As long as the color is the same, the different flowers should mix beautifully.”
The Away Game-Day Arrangement
Transporting flowers to a tailgate party can be a challenge, but Katie has an easy solution. “I like to call it cup holder arrangements.” Simply use a drinking glass as a vase and stick arrangements in the cup holders of your car. “Glasses are the perfect chameleon vase,” says Katie. “You can embellish or leave the arrangement plain so flowers are the star.”
To create your own cup holder arrangement, measure the stems by standing them against your glass, then cut and arrange. Keep the arrangement easy to transport by cutting blooms so they stand just over the rim. Katie likes to add in a few twigs, such as curly willow, to loosen up the look and give it some height.
The Home Game-Day Arrangement
If you’re planning on watching the big game at home, you have several options for displaying your glass flower arrangements. For a buffet, serve up your flowers right along with your spread. Katie used our Southern Living Tiered Wire Basket. “Just tuck your glasses into the three-tier basket along with the napkins, buns and condiments,” says Katie.
Eating at the table? Make smaller arrangements in glasses and place them at each setting, Katie suggests. “I also like to group them together on a tray as a centerpiece and add in fresh thyme that adds a stylish look and fragrance to the table.”
Another winning touch is to tuck a few flowers into your drink bucket. Fill a few empty bottles with water and add stems. An added bonus: the ice will keep the flowers fresh longer.
Game-Stopping Centerpiece
Echo the look of turf with a wheat grass centerpiece for your table or buffet spread. It’s an easy arrangement that guests are sure to remember, says Katie. Start with a flat of wheat grass from a florist. Use a serrated knife to cut through the roots and fit it to your serving tray. Wrap and pin floral ribbon around the bottom to hide the roots, and tuck cut flowers around the tray. For the finishing touch, insert small water picks of flowers into the grass.
“This works great as a centerpiece or on your buffet,” Katie promises. “Either way, you’ll score with your fellow football fans.”
