Decorating Dilemmas is a weekly column in which our stylists answer your design questions, so you can tackle your home decorating project with complete confidence.
Dear Style Studio,
We are stumped! After furniture shopping for a month and consulting all of my friends … I still don’t see the light.
We bought a new house almost a year ago and have not purchased furniture for our family room. The only windows in the room and the fireplace are both on the same window, which leaves me two huge walls to decorate (especially if we decide to mount the TV above the fireplace). Do we do two couches and a chair? If so, where to a put the TV? How do I fill the walls? Ahhhh … my head is spinning.
If we figure out the television placement and major seating, the rest will fall into space.
We are trying to fill the room and still keep a breezy feel since we live in a coastal area. Leather sofas are preferred as we have a dog and small children. I would love to hear your ideas.
We actually just purchased the French Farmhouse Mirror, but I’m not sure if it is going to work the room. It’s a keeper but this piece may find its home in a different room. Please help.
I would like to stop thinking about furniture and enjoy summer with my family before school starts! Thank you!!!!
Dimensions: 19 feet (fireplace wall), opposite wall is a bit longer 21.8 deep by 19ft wide.

Julie,
Your room has such beautiful natural light providing a fabulous canvas for any furniture layout!
Since you are starting from scratch, we have created two different options for your space. In both plans, we recommend keeping a light and fresh feeling with the furniture to maintain the coastal style you desire.
In Layout A, the focus is creating a multi-functional room by dividing the space into two areas.
In the seating area, we recommend utilizing our Baldwin Sectional with a Chaise and slipcover it in a neutral Sunbrella fabric. This piece will provide for you the best solution for easy maintenance since the slipcover can be washed. Pull up two club chairs along with small upholstered ottomans to complete the group. The Larkin Chairs would be an ideal choice. To the right of the fireplace, consider adding a Thurston Chair to create a reading corner!
This beutiful and functional conversational group faces an expansive media pieces, we suggest our Tuscan Group … offering many different possbilities to fill out your large wall!
In the second area, we have incorporated a trestle table and benches that cuddle the wall and create a great spot for family projects or game night. Flank this central hub with bookcases to store games and necessities for your family gatherings.

In Layout B, the focus is on family conversations and media. We recommend our L-shaped Baldwin Sectional to provide maximum seating and comfort for the area. Since easy maintenance is crucial in this high traffic area, we suggest ordering a slip cover for the sectional.
On the wall opposite the fireplace, we think a group of our Morgan Bookcases will offer fabulous storage for books, baskets and family treasures.
Pull up a couple of our Thurston Wing Chairs for reading your favorite novel or sharing a bedtime story.

For both layouts, the key is to keep your fabrics crisp and easy so you can maintain your coastal styling!
Happy Decorating!

I have been wanting to buy furniture for my family room but I can’t find the way of knowing where to put what and what style of sofas to buy. I’ve always wanted a sectional but because of the way this room is positioned I think this type of sofa will block the flow to the room. I wish there was an option to send you a picture so that you have an idea of what I’m talking about.

Dude
this site is a joke, every question is “answered” by Caroline who just shamelessly promotes their “design solutions” team. and yes do not forget to submit the form with all you contact information which they will sell to spammers. LOL
How to Decorate
Hi ‘Dude,’
You’re right. I do answer nearly all of the questions. We’re a very, very small team. I try to help answer everyone’s questions, but sometimes for readers who need a trained, interior designer, I suggest they get the help of our free service that can help them with larger projects and more complicated questions.
Only two people on our team have access to anyone’s contact information, myself and the interior designer who may contact them for more information about their space and who sends a detailed design plan once it’s completed. We don’t use their contact information for anything else.
I’m sorry if this bothers you. We just hope to help people with their decorating problems.
