Lack of Focus In My Great Room

Holly L Collage

Decorating Dilemmas is a weekly column in which our stylists answer your design questions, so you can tackle your home decorating project with complete confidence.

Dear How to Decorate,

With an open concept floor plan, my great room (aka living room) is the hub of our home.

My spouse and I disagree on mounting our TV over the mantle, so it sits on a corner media cabinet.

The coffee table is dated, but I’m struggling on what type of table or ottoman to replace it with.

I love my new Abeille side table, but I can’t seem to pull anything together for fear of making everything blend or match too much.

Please help me get focused to create a comfortable yet stylish space.

Thank you!

Holly

Holly,

You have great colors going in your space, so let’s just do some tweaking to make it all come together. We think you should draw from the colors from your painting for a focus point.

We suggest pulling your sofa back from the conversation group as a first step.  It seems that it is too close to the fireplace … it needs to be pushed out to the right. Consider adding a floor lamp to the back of the sofa near the fireplace for added task lighting.

For an ottoman, we recommend our Graham Storage Ottoman upholstered in Deville Seafoam. Now repeat the artwork colors with pillows in Danish Sky, Velvet Teal and Velvet Indigo. You could also include patterned pillows for additional interest.

Consider adding a couple of larger accessories to your mantel so your artwork doesn’t look lonely. We think a pair of our Demijohns or a pair of Chateau Candle Lanterns flanking the painting would be perfect!

Placing a Benton Etagere’ to the right of the fireplace will help to balance that wall and provide you sophisticated book shelves!

Happy Decorating!
