Meet Sarah Macklem of The Yellow Cape Cod

#CelebrateBallard with Sarah on Pinterest

Ballard Designs is turning 30 years old! To celebrate the occasion, we’ve asked one of our favorite bloggers – Sarah Macklem of The Yellow Cape Cod – to curate her very own Pinterest board featuring 30 of her favorite things from Ballard Designs. Sarah’s got the perfect mix of traditional and modern in her own home, and her DIY holiday decorating ideas will inspire you to think outside the box. Let’s get to know the woman behind the blog, shall we?

The Scoop

If you could describe your decorating style in one sentence, what would it be?

I would describe my decorating style as “Updated Traditional”. Classic design with a modern edge. Oops, that’s two sentences.

How and where do you find your inspiration?

I find design inspiration in everyday life. Whether I am working in my own home or a client’s, inspiration always starts with the family.

What’s been the most challenging part of your home to decorate, and how did you overcome it?

Our family of five lives in a cape cod-style home which by design is on the cozy side (small). Making the best use of space is my top priority. There’s simply not room for an abundance of furniture and accessories. Each element must serve a purpose as well as make an impact visually. Multifunctional pieces and furniture that incorporates storage can be found in every room.

What’s the one thing every style-conscious homeowner should have?

My feeling is something whimsical or unexpected is a must in every well-designed home. Whether it’s your child’s art, a quirky family heirloom or a statement rug, if it makes you smile it should be on display. Elements such as these are a reflection of you. Personal touches are always on trend and never go out of style.

And last but certainly not least, what do you love most about sharing your home on your blog?

TheYellowCapeCod.com is my creative outlet. It’s a way for me to share design inspiration with others. Interior design is not only my profession but it’s also a lifelong passion. Being able to tell my daily design stories on the blog is one of the most rewarding aspects of having an interior design business. It is also a great way to interact with others who share a passion for design.

Sarah is extremely talented, creative, and helps those of us who lack her sophisticated design sense feel like we can attain the same look in our homes. Her personal touch was key to making my new house into a home that my family and I can live in comfortably and I am so proud of!

I love checking the Yellow Cape Cod every morning! I look forward to new ideas that might work for my family and ways to use pieces I’ve seen in popular catalogs. Someday I will save enough to have Sarah redo some rooms, but in the meantime I enjoy looking at her designs while I drink my coffee!
