A New Family Room in a New House by Sally S.

Decorating Dilemmas is a weekly column in which our stylists answer your design questions, so you can tackle your home decorating project with complete confidence.

Hello,
We recently moved into a new home and we need just about everything for our family room. We need furniture – a small sectional, coffee table, end tables, media cabinet and accessories, including throw pillows. The wall color is a pale grey (BM barren plain) and the wool rug we have in there is a grey and white scroll pattern from Pottery Barn. I would like to use our painting from Positano, Italy for inspiration – it has some great, bright colors – blue, red, yellow, and green!

I also am struggling with furniture placement since the room is narrow. I’m not even sure if a sectional will fit in this room, which is approximately 12′ wide x 21′ long. This room connects to the kitchen where you can see our Ballard kitchen table. Our family room also has some sliding doors that open to a deck in the backyard.

We are a family of four with two young girls. My decorating taste tends to be more classic with some rustic/country touches as well as contemporary and whimsical touches. I usually lean toward blues and greens and other cool colors.

I love just about everything in the Ballard catalog! Thank you so much for your help!

Sally:  We think we have some ideas to help you with your Family Room.

Let’s take a look at the floor plan we designed for you:

Let’s pull some ideas together for your room.  We chose our Baldwin Sectional with a Trilbey Basketweave slipcover.  It’s so comfy and kid friendly!  You can add a couple of Chevron Pillows in spa for a “pop” of color.  We also added a Larkin Swivel Chair Glider covered in Fiona Brown.  On the windows, try our Ivory Fringed Burlap Panels – hang them close to the ceiling and skimming the window frames for a dramatic look.  The flat screen has been placed on our Vetrina Media Center in Dark Gray.  It will keep your electronics well hidden.  The tables we chose are 2 Durham Bunching Tables for in front of the sectional and our Durham Console for behind the sectional – add our Ellis Lamp in light blue.  Above the sectional, we chose Nuances de Bleu Giclee to help pull everthing together.

Let us know what you think – we love the feedback!
