Decorating My Living Room/Den Area

Decorating Dilemmas is a weekly column in which our stylists answer your design questions, so you can tackle your home decorating project with complete confidence.

Dear Style Studio team,

I would like this room to be less formal, but this is our only den/living room area, so it still needs a bit of a formal feel but with more comfort.

I want to stay with the gold paint color and keep the existing rug, so I’d like to keep with a palette of gold, olive green, and red with some black accents. I’d like the floor plan to stay open as I have two focal points — the fire place and TV. What kind of seating arrangement is ideal? I’m looking to purchase new sofa, coffee table, and chairs, but I need guidance!

Best,
Susy

Dear Susy:

We think the floor plan you created works. We do, however, have a few suggestions to help you finish your look. We think our Griffin Sofa in sage microfiber would give you a sophisticated look without being too formal. The microfiber will be durable with the daily wear and tear.  For your windows, we chose our Concorde Panels in green to help tie things together. Instead of a coffee table, we think a pair of our Moroccan Garden Seats would work well.

A pair of our Stratford Chairs covered in Butter Twill  placed on either side of your armoire would be inviting and comfortable. You can also add accent pillows in Gilliam Red for a pop of color. We chose our Cote D’Ivorie Table Lamp as a reading lamp and our Olivia Mirrored Side Table could be placed next to the Stratford Chair to hold your drinks. Lastly, we chose our Red Anemones Floral Art to lean above the mantel.

We do hope you like our suggestions! Please send us pictures when you complete your look.

Happy Decorating,

Help!! My dilemma is how to use a wall in my large rectangular den with a large brick fireplace to display a host of people pictures and a second wall for awards and plaques.
