Decorating Dilemma: Christine's Music Room

Decorating Dilemmas is a weekly column in which our stylists answer your design questions, so you can tackle your home decorating project with complete confidence.

Dear How to Decorate,

We recently moved into our new home, and I’m struggling to make a long room into a music/study room. I’m keeping my black furniture, but I want the room to look light and bright. In the rest of the house I’m using neutrals, mineral blue/aqua, and blue. Help!

Thanks,

Christine

Christine,

Thank you for your submitting your Decorating Dilemma! What a beautiful room with plenty of gorgeous light! Since the architectural details and color of the space are the perfect counterbalance to your black furniture, consider utilizing the furniture as the ‘neutral’ in the space. Repeat the lighter colors and allow the depth of the ebony to ground the area.

A good rug is the perfect foundation to any room, and we suggest our Catherine Rug to provide a whisper of the colors used throughout the rest of your home. Providing a subtle combination of neutrals and soft blues, this rug is a great platform on which to place your home office pieces.

Additional seating options would be a bonus for this room.  We imagine the Strasbourg Chair in Linen Spa is a good mix of classic and fresh.

Finding a balance amid angular lines can be a challenges, but our Concorde Medallion Panel draped between your windows shows just a touch of softness against the rectangular windows.  Hang with simple black iron hardware to repeat a touch of black at a high level.

Dehavilland Console will provide extra storage and a great color option to all the other black pieces in the room.  Top it with our Grand Palais Round mirror to reflecting light.  Don’t forget to add a couple of table lamps in the room for evening illumination.

Happy Decorating!
