Decorating Dilemma: Tara’s Living Room

Decorating advice for a living room with blue walls

Decorating Dilemmas is a weekly column in which our stylists answer your design questions, so you can tackle your home decorating project with complete confidence.

Dear How to Decorate,

I’m decorating my living room, and I have a few pieces but need help finishing the space. Can you suggest some chairs, a rug, and drapes?

Thank you for your time.

Dear Tara,

Your living room has beautiful light and stately trimwork that creates the perfect canvas for a stunning room. The Travis Chairs in Queen’s Velvet Spa that you selected will be a great addition to your existing furniture.

Every good room design starts with a rug … so our suggestion for your space is our Catherine Rug or our Colby Rug (we’ve shown the Colby in this collage). Each one captures the color layers of your room but both have a slightly different personality.

Consider hanging the Firenze Panels in Spa for a polished look around your windows. Of course, you now need a piece of artwork over the mantle that will echo the polished look. Our Portal Art is an understated piece that draws the eye into its peaceful content.

Along with good lighting, your room is in great need of side tables. Our Olivia Side table or Andrews Side table, in white wash, are two fantastic options for the furniture layout. Top off the tables with a lamp, like our Dawson Lamp.  Remember that table lamps don’t have to match!

As a finishing touch, consider adding a mirror in the room for a reflective quality (like our Cassidy mirror), and toss a variety of pillows on your sofa and chairs for another texture layer.

Always start with an inspiration piece in your room and build off of it then everything will be cohesive and beautiful.

Happy Decorating!
