Decorating Dilemmas is a weekly column in which our stylists answer your design questions, so you can tackle your home decorating project with complete confidence.

Dear How to Decorate,

This is the room across from my family room, but it’s not organized and full of furniture we don’t want! The ping pong table is getting upgraded, and we’d like a new table, seating, pictures, and window treatments. I have a small bar table with 2 stool I could use as well?

Help!

Denise,

We love starting with a blank slate, and it is such a luxury to have an abundance of space.  A good rug is a great foundation to begin to build a fabulous room so we suggest a Devlin Tufted Rug, which is soft underfoot and has beautiful warm and cool colors in it. We’d also suggest painting your game room since basements often feel cramped and dreary. A very light blue-gray or a cream will help the space feel larger and more airy.

The Baldwin Apartment Sofa, paired with a washable off white twill slipcover, will be perfect in the space where you now have your existing table. We suggest hanging your existing mirror above the sofa to capture and reflect the light from the windows and doors into this side of the space. At the left arm of the sofa, consider adding the Allen Side Table with a Lauren Table Lamp. Place a Carlyle Chair in Milina Gold next to the sofa, so that it can swivel to either watch the ping pong game or face the sofa. It’ll become the best seat in the house!

A round table, like our 42” Sidney Pedestal Table, positioned across from the Baldwin seating group will provide a fabulous game table. We suggest pulling up four Simone Wicker Chairs for a more casual feeling.  Hang two Crown Ledges above the table as a gallery perch for family photos and children’s artwork that can be changed with the seasons.

On the other side of the room, in place of the mirror we moved,  hang a collage of  the Vintage Marquee Typesetter Plaques in whatever letters you’d like. On the wall parallel to the ping pong table, we suggest hanging the 3 – Suzanne Kasler Map Prints for fabulous color and the perfect conversation starter.

We know these additions will make this a space that family and friends will enjoy for years to come.

Happy Decorating!
