Dear How to Decorate,
Our new family room and dining room have fixed colors in cabinets (green and light cherry). How can I coordinate existing furniture pieces and new furniture pieces? We need a sectional sofa too – what is best placement for all pieces?
Thanks for your help,
Fiona
Dear Fiona,
What a welcoming and spacious space you have to decorate. We are excited to help you select some key pieces that will work with what you already have, and get you started in building a functional and beautiful family room.
To begin, we recommend our Baldwin 4 -Piece Sectional in the Trilby Basketweave Natural fabric. This is our most popular sectional, and it will work perfectly in your family room space facing the fireplace and centered between the windows. It looks like you are ready to hang a flat screen T.V. above the fireplace. This will make a wonderful seating arrangement for watching movies or sporting events as a family.
Try adding a collection of throw pillows, to the sectional. We chose pillows in our Signature Velvet Sage and in our Signature velvet pillow with chain tape and our Signature velvet pillow both in sage. They will carry the deep green color of your cabinetry over to the seating arrangement.
To ground your large space and warm up those beautiful wood floors, our New Bern Rug would be perfect. The muted colors will work well with your existing greens and browns, and the 9×12 size will proportionately cover the floor space well.
We think the Carrington Cocktail Table in Rustic Pine will be able to function well in this cozy space. The round shape fits with the Baldwin very nicely.
Have you considered adding some counter stools to your granite counter? We love the Marguerite Counter Stools for their comfort and size. Depending on how wide the counter area is you could fit 2 or 3 into this space and increase your seating options.
For the wall to the right of the fireplace, we suggest a piece of artwork to pull the all of the elements together. Our Seasons Art in Green and Sienna is a very substantial size and will make a statement that compliments the look of the room. The soft muted greens and browns will carry the color story throughout the space.
If space allows, we would also suggest bringing in another occasional chair to be placed on one side of the fireplace. We chose our Shiloh Spool Chair in Twill Celery to continue that thread of green found in your cabinetry and pillows. We’d also like to suggest a side table, like our Sophie Side Table which can be topped with a lamp, like our Luciana Table Lamp. This will create a spot to add some ambient lighting or a little reading space.
Happy Decorating,
