Decorating Dilemmas is a weekly column in which our stylists answer your design questions, so you can tackle your home decorating project with complete confidence.
Dear How to Decorate,
I would like to remodel my home office which happens to be the first room that you see when you enter our home. The formal dining room is directly across the entryway from the formal living room (which is the room we use as a home office).
I really like gray currently and would love to paint my house in hues of gray. However, we have a lot of beige and browns throughout the home, so I don’t know how to make gray work.
I LOVE the Tuscan Return Office Group in Dark Gray and would like to incorporate floor length curtains, a sitting chair with reading lamp, possibly a new rug and paint color. I’d also like it to blend with the dining room that is on the other side of the foyer.
I can’t wait to update our home office — it’s the first room on my list.
Thanks,
Carolyn
Dear Carolyn,
Gray palates are so soothing and very appropriate for an in-home office setting. We’ve paired the Tuscan Collection Return Desk Group with our Gray Belgian Linen Draperies as a background for your office space. Suggestions for complimentary wall colors, include Benjamin Moore Rodeo and Seattle Mist- both gray paint colors, are in the warm gray family. Remaining in the same paint color family will work well with the beiges and browns in your other rooms.
The wonderfully comfortable Carlyle Swivel Chair upholstered in Courtney Spa will add muted colors of spa, citron, gray, and taupe, and provide cozy a cozy reading area. Light the reading area with our traditional Julian Apothecary Floor Lamp. Our Braided Jute Rug with a gray border will ground your room and add texture and warmth. For a delightful pop of color, accessorize with our new Landon Linen Flange Pillow in brightly colored Citron.
We hope you enjoy your inviting and cozy office!
Happy Decorating!

Would love to see your team’s decorating ideas for a corner in a living room where the big screen TV is placed diagonally. Currently have a corner shelf hanging above TV with a beautiful Vase. Thank U in advance.

I have contacted you before but I’m still up in the air as to purchasing the Vendome double pedestal table….I absolutely LOVE it but all of the other furniture in this particular room is more of a honey colored wood…….I guess I would like to know if your design team thinks that this would be a terrible clash of wood tones?? HELP!!
Caroline @ How to Decorate
Hi Barbara,
Our design team can definitely make a recommendation as to whether this table would work with the other furniture in your space. Simply fill out this form (be sure to upload photos of your dining room so our team can get a read on the other wood pieces in your space), and they’ll let you know what they think!
Best of Luck,
The How to Decorate Team
