If there’s one color combination we’ve been enamored with all year long, it’s blue and white. So why not continue this fresh and modern color thread through Christmas? That’s right, this year we’re thinking beyond the traditional red and green and daring to be different with blue and white.
So before you drag your decorations out of storage, think about experimenting this year with a more edited look and embrace this chic, alternative color scheme. To get you in the holiday spirit, take a look at some of our ideas.
Our blue and white color scheme transforms this everyday space into a winter wonderland. It starts with a pair of abstract prints rendered in the icy colors of winter, continues in our Chinoiserie collection of ceramic vases and ornaments filling the tree and is punctuated by the round ottoman, upholstered in Indigo Twill, that grounds the entire room. The repeated color scheme combined with ornaments of similar shape and size helps create a unified, uncluttered look — and a welcome relaxing feel during the hectic holidays.
We love the idea of decorating with Chinoiserie for Christmas, because the ancient pattern fulfills that need for tradition while the blue and white color combination makes it all feel so fresh. For greater dimension, throw metallics into the mix, as we did here with our Mercury Glass Candlesticks and Sunburst Mirrors.
Rejuvenate the holiday table with the blue and white patterned dishes of Bunny Williams’ Campbell House Dinnerware. Combined with her Cobalt Glassware and pretty floral tablecloth, the place setting is a delightful change from the usual staid holiday affair. A simple centerpiece of greenery, candles and metallic accents is all you need to finish the look.
If you’re worried your blue and white decor screams anchors and sailboats, don’t be. Here, we warmed up our indigo Tate Sofa with a pair of Velvet & Linen Pillows for rich texture and tone-on-tone appeal. To give a holiday feel to the neutral palette, we infused fresh winter greenery throughout and mixed in metallics for added depth.
Here’s further proof that you don’t have to go red and green to feel the holiday cheer. Our navy, white and beige Henri French Stripe Bedding, along with the round Cassidy Mirror and accessories in the room, serve as beautiful accent colors to the earthy holiday accents in brown, gold and green.

how do you do bookcases that aren’t all books and aren’t too full of other things? balance is my problem. blue accessories mostly — pots, paintings, lamps, smaller wooden items but still looks “wrong/” thanks. lucy
Caroline @ How to Decorate
Hi Lucy,
We have a couple of suggestions. We think a ratio of about half and half or 2/3 books to accessories. We also think it works best to place your books on the shelves first. Try alternating between stacking them horizontally and standing them up. Then, once your books are placed. Add your accessories. We like to place the largest items first, like bowls, vases, or sculptural pieces.
Once you’d place the large places, you can sprinkle in smaller items.
Best of Luck!

Spent a bucket full of money this holiday season , as did several of my friends, on Chanukah decorations, which were fantastic this season! It’s a shame Ballard Designs was not among the vendors, you had nothing!
