January-February 2016 Paint Colors

Paint colors from Winter 2016 Ballard Designs catalog

Benjamin Moore's Sugarcane Pink from Ballard Designs catalog

Because we shoot in real homes, we are not always at liberty to paint the walls. In those cases, we have chosen paint colors that best match the wall color in the photo. Please be aware that color may vary due to various light conditions, finish and other factors.  Therefore, it’s always a great idea to test a paint sample on your wall first. We use Benjamin Moore paint, but most paint stores can match any color.

We will be painting the exterior of our home and will use Brewster Gray for the shutters and front door. Would a cool or warm neutral work best for this? For instance, I’m considering Edgecomb Gray by Ben Moore for the body of the house. Would this pair well? The front of our home faces mostly west and somewhat north. Thank you!

My front room faces NW it is a inner room there are no windows the light comes in from the front door, of the foryed as well as the EXLARGE arched window in the diningroom which faces NW as well. The front room is jointed by a sunroom and a double sided fireplace flanked with a arched on each side.Right now both rooms are painted grey I would like to change the color but I am unsure what color to use, because from the front door you can see the kitchen, the sun room, diningroom, and front room I could use some help.

      Lisa,

Both Sugarcane and Clinton Brown are the exact color used in the room with these items, but we do still recommend you paint swatches in your own space first. Sugarcane is a clear, light pink without much gray in it, but depending on your room, it may come out darker or muddier. The same goes for Clinton Brown.

      Best of luck!

I like the Brewster Gray color for my dining room, but in many of the pictures there seems to be a bit of a blue hue in the color. Is that based on the accessories added to the room, or does that have a blue tone? Some of the pics make the paint look more gray. I’m trying to find a true gray. Do you have any suggestions? Thank you.

      Angela,
Brewster Gray definitely has a blueish tint to it. If you’re looking for a true gray, we don’t suggest this one. Maybe try something like Benjamin Moore’s Silver Lake?

Hello! I love the way White Dove looks in the pictures in the catalog. I’ve made so many costly painting mistakes. And the thing is, I’ve purchased so many samples of paint, have fan decks, ordered larger paint chips from SW & BM, used poster board, etc. This is my issue: I want to paint the same neutral, classic color throughout my house. My house is a colonial with a huge 2 story entry that faces the north (the DR & LR do too), and a wall that is shared & connects to the back of the house which has a 2 story family room facing the south. There are lots of windows, so plenty of natural light, and there is a “bridge” walkway on the 2nd flr that overlooks the entry way & family room. I typically like the paint in the family room, because it turns out warm, but anything I paint in the front of the house turns either fleshy, peachy, pink, and the grays I tried look either lilac, blue, etc. I have to paint the same color in the front entry, as in the back family room because they share a wall – and am fine with even a beige, tan, etc. But would White Dove be appropriate throughout the house? Can you describe the color to me – i.e. undertone, feeling, etc. How does it look in rooms facing the north? I have Mullican Wire-Brushed Hickory Champagne floors throughout (they have a orangish undertone). I never thought of White Dove for walls (only for trim). I will purchase a sample to try, but would love your professional opinion too. Thank You

      Christy,
Paint is so tricky. One color can look vastly different from room to room. White Dove is usually a warmer white but still white. Not a lot of undertones. However, our best suggestion would just be to pick 3-4 whites that you like, BM White Dove, Benjamin Moore Chantilly Lace, and maybe another two. Then paint a swatch on each wall in each room. That way you can get a feel for how it will look from space to space. Also, if you are going to paint the whole color throughout the house, which sounds like a great idea, you may need to accept the fact, that the color may not look the same in each room. That’s ok!
      Best of luck,

I’ve been toying with the idea of using pink in a room. It really amazes me how lovely the pink shows up in the photos when the swatch looks quite light. Brilliant.
