Decorating Dilemmas: Cathy’s Living Room

Decorating a living room with teal accents

Decorating Dilemmas is a weekly column in which our stylists answer your design questions, so you can tackle your home decorating project with complete confidence.

Dear How to Decorate,

We live in our living room. We have two kids ages 11 and 14 and are tv is there along with our wii. I’d like something neutral and easy to clean. I don’t want a lot of furniture as the room isn’t large but I want it comfortable.

I’ve taken a few pieces out and have been thinking of a sectional but with the placement of our fireplace and TV, I’m not sure it will work. Currently we have a sofa and love seat but I’d like to replace them.

Any suggestions are welcome,

Cathy

Cathy,

We love the stone fireplace; it adds such warmth to the room. Taking a cue of the fireplace we have added layers that invoke the same feel and provide maximum seating and comfort.

A sectional will work in your space … if you relocate the television to the left of the fireplace and then position the Davenport Sectional with a Trilby Basketweave Bark Slipcover in the corner where your television is currently located. Since layering a rug on your carpet will define the seating arrangement, we love the Montero Rug for your space. It’s multi-color color story which will enhance the stone on the fireplace.

Adding a round Bornova Coffee Table in Brown works perfectly with a sectional because there are no severe corners and its generous size will give you a resting place for your favorite accessories.   You will need additional horizontal space and ambient lighting. Our brown Morgan End Table, paired with the Edison Table Lamp, at the end of the sofa will provide great lighting as well as repeat the blue color from the rug. The Leather Cube in Mineral tucked under the Ananda Serving Table in Rustic Black (we don’t want all the wood tones to be matchy, matchy) will be perfect for the kids to pull out when playing the Wii. The addition of the Mercury Glass Stacked Lamp will add more lighting. The last touch to this area would be to add Firenze Drapery Panels in Spa to soften and frame the window.

Balance and lighting are such an important part of any room and we want to make your room as comfortable and inviting as possible. The placement of a Dehavilland 3 Drawer Console in Mahogany across from the fireplace will serve multi purposes; balance the fireplace, add storage and additional lighting. A pair of blue Luciana Table Lamps on the console sprinkles the blue to all sides of the room. The final touch is to add the Morning Mist Art above the console.

We know these suggestions will give you the comfort you desire as well as being beautiful.

Happy Decorating!
