Decorating Dilemma: Dawne’s Master Bedroom

Decorating a master bedroom with rust colors and neutrals

Decorating Dilemmas is a weekly column in which our stylists answer your design questions, so you can tackle your home decorating project with complete confidence.

Dear How to Decorate,

We just upgraded to a king sized bed and need a new headboard. I have been looking at the Louis Headboard in Brown or White or one of the upholstered ones with nailheads.

We have not rearranged the wall decor from the queen sized bed yet so it looks a bit odd. I just ordered the Audree Pom Pom Bedskirt in Natural and two Euro Pom Pom Shams with our initials embroidered in white. We have been updating our bedroom with Ballard and have lamps, artwork, shelves, mirror and the chocolate check fabric on the bench and chair!

All decor suggestions welcome 🙂

Dear Dawne,

Thank you so much for being such an amazing fan! We are happy to share some ideas for a king head board and even a few new ideas to make your existing items look fresh. Let’s try moving a few things around. You have some nice items, but they seem a little crowded in your present layout and could shine a little more with a few tweaks.

We do like the Louis Headboard in Old World Brown – as you were considering. But we think that creating a light and neutral palette in the room will make everything feel more modern. Our very first thought is to replace the drapes. If you use our Suzanne Kasler Linen Drapery Panels in Parchment, the room will begin to take on a lighter look. We like the Giselle Tufted Headboard with our Rust Linen. This headboard will set the stage for a fresh new look in the room. We love the Audree Pom Pom Bedskirt and shams. We think by adding the matching Audree Quilt and Jarden Toile Duvet and Shams in Sandalwood, you will create a beautiful and soft statement.

Next to the bed, the Olivia 30” Round Table will look elegant and then move the small night stand to the right of the bed. Consider relocating the book stand to another room to open up this space. Move the bench from under your window and position it at the foot of the bed. Now, the chair and small foot stool can fit nicely in the corner with the Sloan Wood Ball Floor Lamp.

The larger dresser will look more balanced on the wall to the right as you enter the room. Hang your pair of botanical prints above it. Center the Bellesol Mirror above the bed, and to the right side of bed above the side table, combine the canvas print you own of the potted flowers . Above the Olivia table, place our Amaryllis Frost Art canvas print. The smaller dresser should fit on the wall to the left of the entrance.

The final touch will be to add some area rugs in new color. The Talcott Hand Tufted Rug scattered around or a single large version would be fabulous! Top is all off with throw pillows in gray velvet and our Marrakesh Print pillow.

Happy Decorating!
