Decorating Dilemma:

Hi there!

I’m a long-time listener and a first-time emailer! First, I want to express how much I love your podcast. I enjoy following Taryn’s house journey, hearing about Liz providing PowerPoints for paint colors, and Caroline flocking her own tree. You all do such a great job for “hobbyist” decorators, and your guests are always so inspiring.

Now, on to my question… I live in New York City in a cozy apartment, and I’ve been working to update it over time (it’s a rental). The main updates I’ve made are separating the spaces by color and using removable wallpaper. However, I’m experiencing some decision fatigue about whether to wallpaper or leave the entry area of the apartment as is.

See attached photos for details. The entry hallway has a beige grasscloth, and my kitchen features a happy blue. I found some wallpaper that I think could marry the two sections, but I don’t want the space to feel too busy. I’m considering wallpapering the wall with the mirror on it and the small wall with the door. Would you also wallpaper the beam on the left? It acts as a divider between the spaces, so I thought it might be nice to leave it blank.

Let me know what you think!

Thank you for all that you do; I know it takes a lot of time, and we all appreciate it.

Best,
Julia

Hi Julia,

Gabriella and the hosts adore your happy blue kitchen and the warmth your entry grasscloth brings! To streamline your space, Gabriella suggests continuing the grasscloth into the entry area to maintain a cohesive look without overwhelming your charming New York apartment. If you’re drawn to the floral pattern you mentioned, stick to using it on the mirror wall and door wall only, leaving the beam in neutral tones to serve as a gentle divider between spaces.

Thank you for sharing your lovely home with us, Julia. We hope these ideas help you create the perfect balance in your apartment!
