Our Bedroom Lacks Charm and Character

Bedroom Lacks CharmQuestion:

Dear Ballard Designs,

I’m thrilled to be able to share with you these photos of our bedroom because we could use all of the decorating advice you have to offer! We decorated and even redecorated many of the other rooms in our house, but our own bedroom has not been done since we moved in almost 9 years ago. It clearly lacks charm and character, so I would love to add interest, accent color, and textures to make it more of a retreat.

It is likely that your decorators have never seen pharmaceutical drums covered in contact paper used as nightstands! Check out our artwork above our bed…our son taped those drawings up about 6 years ago, and I haven’t even moved them. The rocker ended up in our room now that our children are out of cribs, and two identical tall dressers with no appeal are on the wall not pictured.

There certainly are some features I love about our room. I adore the faux-silk panels I hung in place of closet doors. I love the mantel shelf across from the bed and my little desk nook is a favorite place to write letters. Mostly, I love our bedroom because it is ours and feels like home, but I dream of transforming it into a more romantic and inviting space!

Thank you, thank you!
Kristine

Bedroom Lacks CharmAnswer:

Dear Kristine,

Thank you so much for your recent inquiry regarding your master bedroom. We know how difficult it can be to redecorate with young children. Priorities change with children. We do, however, think it is a wise investment to redo your Master Bedroom. Not only does it add value to your home, but it can become a retreat from the rigors of a harrowing day.

Painting the room can add a very dramatic change for little money. Annapolis Green (687) from Benjamin Moore would look stunning, but if you prefer a more neutral palette Lady Finger (1045) is a light beige that works well too. To compliment the wall color we think our Camden Untufted Headboard covered in Toffee Check fabric would be perfect. Add a dust ruffle, pillow shams or some pillows in our Etiene fabric mixed with the Toffee Check to tie the whole look together. A neutral coverlet in an off-white tone will work well with any of these fabrics.

Transform the windows by adding our Toffee Check Panels hung close to the ceiling, giving your room a romantic and sumptuous feel. Our Terrific Trio Tables covered in Spa Linen tablecloths with our Salerno Urn Table Lamp Base with Burlap Lamp Shade will serve you well at bedside. Wall art is a very personal choice. The choices are endless and vary greatly in style. Just as a suggestion, our choice would be 3 or 4 Mirrored Heron Giclee Prints hung side by side above your headboard. Lastly, why not add a Parsons Chair with a custom slipcover in the Etiene fabric to compliment your desk nook?

Our team truly hopes that our suggestions will give you some direction in making your master bedroom into a sanctuary. The best of luck working on your bedroom, and if you have any additional questions, please let us know. Don’t forget to send us some pictures once you have completed the room.

Sincerely,
The Style Studio Team
