How to Choose the Right Counter Stool Height for Your Kitchen

How to Choose the Right Counter Stool Height for Your Kitchen
Finding the right counter stool height for your kitchen is challenging because there are so many factors to consider. Aside from finding the perfect counter stool height, you’ll also want to consider comfort and style. Below is our quick guide to helping you find the best stools for your kitchen counter, kitchen island, breakfast bar or even your in-home pub.

The perfect counter stool height for your kitchen

Choose the right counter stool height

Chair, bar or counter height? To determine which stool you need, measure the height of your table or counter. Keep in mind you need 9″-13″ between the seat and the counter for seating comfort.

  • Heights of chair stools are generally 18″ from floor to seat. Pair with a table or counter 28″-30″ in height.
  • Heights of counter stools are generally 24″-26″ inches from floor to seat. Pair with a table or counter 36″-39″ in height.
  • Heights of bar stools are generally 28″-30″ from floor to seat. Pair with a table or counter 40″-42″ in height.

Learn the best counter stool height and how to fit them in your space

Determine how many stools you can fit

It’s important to provide enough space between stools for people to eat, drink and socialize without bumping elbows. Especially at a kitchen island which is usually the center hub of a kitchen. Here are the rules of thumb we use:

  • If the widest part of your stool is 16″-18″ allow 21″-22″ of space per stool.
  • If the widest part of your stool is 19″- 22″ allow 24″ to 25″ of space per stool.
  • If you choose stools that swivel and/or have arms, you’ll need to add a bit more space between stools.

Consider the style of stool

Do you want to make a design statement or do you want more discreet seating? Do you want to match or layer materials in your kitchen? And do the stools you really want work in the space you have? Your answers can help you determine the style and height of stool that will ultimately work in your kitchen.

If your stools are in a busy or narrow corridor or you don’t want a tall profile that overwhelms your island, choose backless seating that can easily tuck under and away. But if you love to entertain and want something more lounge-worthy, choose a broad-backed stool with deep seating.

If you’ll use your stools where food is served, consider a low-maintenance material, such as leather, wood or metal. If you choose upholstered stools, choose a microfiber that easily wipes clean. Or, choose cushions that you can swap out.

Whether the style of your kitchen is traditional, rustic or contemporary, you can find a stool that complements your look. There’s no need to be too matchy-matchy. If, for example, your dining room is adjacent to your kitchen, it’s not necessary to match the style of seating. And if you already have a lot of wood, try mixing it up with metal stools. Keep an open mind, and you’ll find just the right look for your kitchen.

Hello, I have a 24″ overhang on my marble island and my cabinetmaker has added two legs and a wooden table skirt to wrap around the overhang for that custom look. Do I take that into account when measuring for counter stools? From the floor to the bottom of the skirt is 31″, but to the counter is 36″. What do I do here? Thanks for your help!

      Hi Holli,
This is a tricky one. I would definitely try counter first because it’ll be the most appropriate for your overall island height. You may run into an issue with your knees bumping into the apron. Try stacking some books onto a chair to the appropriate height and test it against your island!

    Hello:

I just ordered four bar stools that were advertised as “29-32 inch seat height”. I need them to be 32″; not 29″ and that’s what they are. Is there anyway to make an adjustment to get the height where I need it to be.
    Thank you!

      Hi Karen,
Since most high top tables are typically counter height, if the table would be right next to your bar height counter, it may be too much for the space to have the varying heights. We suggest maybe going with a normal size table.

The best part of your blog for me is when you talked about the importance of making sure that there will be enough space between tools for people to dine, so you must consider determining the number of stools that can fit in your space. This is a nice tip for me because I’m planning to buy new kitchen stools and covers for it. My goal is to have a comfortable space in my kitchen while maintaining its aesthetic appeal. Thanks!

      Lelia,
Whether to match your stools with your kitchen chairs is a question we get a lot and a tricky one! My vote is to change it up, mostly because it’s so hard to find chairs and stools that match perfectly. If they aren’t exactly the same, try something different but coordinating. It’s hard to make a color suggestion without seeing photos.
      Best of luck!

We do offer bar stools in which the seat is taller than 30 inches. For instance, our “Bailey Woven Stools” have the seat at 32 & 3/4 of an inch high with a cushion. The overall height of the chair is 43 inches high. You can find this bar stool here: .

Hi there, I have a two-fold question – my 36″ x 60″ kitchen peninsula is attached to a wall on one of the short ends and one of the long ends has cupboard doors so only one short end and one long end are free for seating. The cupboards are white, the counter top is black granite and I have gunstock coloured wood floors. Ten years ago when I had the peninsula installed, I intended it as a breakfast bar for my three kids never imagining it would turn into the hub of everything. At that time I purchased 3 very good quality Cape Code type chairs (white painted wood rather roomy chairs with vertical slats in the back rest and foot rests) that are 17-1/2″ wide at their widest point which is the front of the seat. Two chairs are placed along the long side of the breakfast bar and 1 at the short end. My kids are grown up and moved away now and I find that when I entertain, everyone heads for the kitchen and those seats are highly coveted prime real estate. Everyone one wants to sit at the breakfast bar but there are only 3 chairs. What kind of seating can I get that would be comfortable and fit 3 along the long edge? Is this possible for a 60″ space? I wouldn’t be able to use my current chairs as it is way too tight with all 3 of them along the long edge. I considered a bench at one point, but 37″ from the long edge of the breakfast bar there is a wall the length of the kitchen so it would make it difficult to get in and out as it is pretty much boxed in there. And second question, I am changing the location of my ceiling lighting, moving it to over the breakfast bar and installing pot lights throughout the kitchen. I want to install some Moravian star pendants over the breakfast bar as pictured in this post, but I don’t know how many to use and what size they should be. Should this decision be based solely on the 60″ length of the breakfast bar, or does the number of seats along the long edge come into play, or does the fact that one edge is adjacent to a wall count for anything? Help please!

      Corey,
That’s a tricky question, but we do have some suggestions for you. We’ll assume that your barstools are between 19-24 inches wide, and as a general rule of thumb, we recommend leaving 8-10 inches between stools that wide. If you have a more narrow stool (19 inches), we think you can squeeze in 4 stools. However, if your stools are closer to 24 in wide and if they swivel, we would suggest just using 3.
Hopefully that helps! Also you can reference this handy guide if you need.
      Best of luck.

      Caroline,
It really depends on the width of the stool you’re using. We typically recommend leaving at least 6 inches on either side of your stool to allow for space to get in and out. If you’re using a narrow, backless stool — something like our Allen Stool, we think you could probably squeeze it into the space. Because it’s backless, you don’t need quite as much room for maneuvering in and out.
Hopefully that helps. Best of luck!

      Tanya,
We typically recommend a 28-30 seat height to work with a bar height counter, and since your bar height is already a touch higher than most at 43 inches, we recommend at the very least getting a thick cushion that could help make up that extra height of your 26″ stools.

We don’t think so at all! It all depends on the type of granite and the fabric. We suggest ordering some swatches and holding them up to your countertops!

Another advantage to patterned counter stools? They’re better at concealing spills!

While it’s possible to pull off a set of 4 mix and matched bar stools, our strategy would be for each of the barstools to be drastically different. Rather than a pair of matching and a second set of matching. Does that make sense?

      Jen,
Generally speaking, 8 inches is too shallow for a traditional bar or counterstool, but as with so many things in the home, it’s a question of personal preference. We might suggest choosing a backless stool as that should help the stool tuck under and not feel like it’s protruding into your room so much.

For backless counter stools, we love either the Dorchester Stool or the Mallory Slipcovered Counter Stool. The Mallory Slipcovered Stool would look fabulous with a large buffalo check fabric on the slipcover!

For a counter stool with a back, we imagine a Constance Counter Stool in either weathered oak or worn white would look fantastic. Or the classic lines of a Windsor Counter Stool might complement the details of your kitchen as well!

Also, there is 38 inches between the edge of the overhang and my built in oven. Will the square stools take up too much space?

      Hi Lisa,
Thanks for your comment. Stool shopping can be tricky, so we understand. In terms of the size, it depends a lot on personal preference. Standard overhang depth for a counter is usually about 12-15 inches for the most comfortable seating, but again it depends on your preference. Look around your house for a chair that is about the same size as the stool you’re considering and test it at your counter. You can also use some painters tape on the floor tucked under the counter to see if it will take up too much floor space and create traffic issues near your oven. Hopefully that will ease your concern!
      Best of luck,

Q: We like your Constance counter and barstools. I have two questions: (1) Our counter height is 46″. Would the 29-3/4″ height barstools be too low? (2) Our kitchen table and counter are just feet away from each other. I was thinking of the Weathered Oak finish for the barstools and the Chestnut finish for the counter stools at our table. Do you think this would look okay?

      Hi Melissa,

It sounds like your countertops are just a touch shorter than standard height, but we would still suggest a counter height stool.

      Hope that helps,

I am searching for comfortable barstools for my customized 45″ high counter. Would love to spend less than $100 each if possible. Any ideas.

I have a 42 inch breakfast bar at my new house and I’m hoping to use the 27 inch stools from my previous house. Do you think it will be too short? One of my friend has the 31 inch bar stools at her breakfast bar and I always find those uncomfortable to get on and off.

Is the kitchen featured at the top of the article (with the green cabinetry and marble counters) the Southern Living 2013 Idea House kitchen? Looks exactly the same and it’s driving me nuts.

      Hi Nan,

Yes, you’re correct. This is the kitchen from the Southern Living 2013 Idea House in Nashville which we sponsored. We’ll also be sponsoring the 2014 Southern Living Idea House. Good eye!

I have a chocolate brown leather sofa and matching recliner. My end table and coffee table is the industrial style with metal and mango wood tops (light natural wood color). I have black granite counter tops. Would a wood cappuccino color swivel bar stool with black leather seat covers work? Have a new town home and have not chosen a table and chairs yet either. Thinking about a cream distressed display cabinet in my kitchen. Would best stools blend ok? Thx

I am remodeling my kitchen completely and am putting in new cabinets with a counter height bar. My question is I would like a counter height chair with depth like 24″ and have not been able to find any except with arms. I am afraid the arms will prevent chair from being close enough to bar to be comfortable. The stool swivels and I think that might also keep chair further away from bar. Do they make armless couter height chairs with depth in seat of 24″? Thanks

Can I put a barstool with my island that doesn’t have an overhang? My island is 36 inches tall. Would I need your 24 or 30 inch barstool?

You can use stools around your island, although there is no overhang. The stools should be 9″ up to 13″ lower than the height of the counter, so using a stool that is 23 up to 27″ is about the size you should look at.

I have a dining table in my kitchen, just a few feet away from the bar. Should the barstools match the table chairs?

Pat: The barstools can coordinate or you can try to match them. Sometimes if you can’t match a finish closely, the best thing to do is coordinate another color into the mix.

    Hi Ballard,
I need a stool that can fit my counter top. I measured the height of my contertop from the floor is 43″. You suggested to choose the metal one if we have a lot of wood chairs already, what color is the best to match the brown colour of my dining table?
    Thank you.

Dear Yanni: The height of your counter determines that you will need a bar height stool. Because we do not know what color brown nor the style of your dining room set is, it is impossible for us the suggest a color fro your bar stools.

    Hi Ballard:
This page was helpful. It would be even better if:

a: The photos under each guideline matched and illustrated each piece of information given under each segment. For example: height, overhang, swivels, arms/no arms, style options, narrow passages, overhang, seating material, etc…

b: Diagrams for measurement would be helpful.

c: There were more related photos and style suggestions (for stools available through Ballard, under each segment of info.

    Thanks.

We try to give as much information as we can in a few concise paragraphs. Our hope is that if anyone has additional questions – that they will email Style Studio so that we can answer their questions directly. We need a bar stool that the seat is over 30″ high; preferably 36″ because our bar heigth is 48″. Does your company have any that high? If you don’t do you have any suggestions.

Cynthia: Unfortunately Ballard does not do custom bar stools. The seat height ( 36″) you are looking for is a custom feature. Our bar stools are between 28 to 30″ high (seat). Our suggestion is to go online and locate companies that produce custom bar stools – you ahould be able to order exactly what you want.

How much overhang should a counter have to comfortably fit a bar stool under?

    • Reply

      Ballard Designs

      October 5, 2011

Marcia: Overhangs can vary – the average barstool is approximately 18 to 20″ deep, so if you choose a barstool with no back you may want the overhang to be about 18″. It all depends on whether you want all of the stool to be tucked under the counter. If the barstool has a back – measure from the front to the beginning of the back to determine the amount of overhang you want. An average overhang for a counter is between 10 to 12″ but nothing is etched in stone. Just make sure that the overhang is supported by counter brackets or corbels for a sturdy countertop.
