Family Room Help!

Hi!

We moved into our home a year ago this month. One of the first things we did was renovate the family room. We gutted the shiny brown laminate bar and built in’s around the fireplace and removed the dark paneling circa 1966. We refinished the floors and added the board and batten. I have been struggling ever since to “finish” the space. The board and batten, which I love, is making it difficult for me to decorate.

One of my biggest dilemmas is the built in cabinet under the TV. It is 72″W x 23″D and there is 19.5″ clearance to the TV. I can’t tell you how many accessories have been added and removed trying to finish the space. The fireplace mantle is coming down and a new one will be built, so I also struggle with how the space under the TV will work with the mantle accessories.

I am also in need of fabric for a valance to top the double set of sliding glass doors, accessories for the console table and cabinet on the other side of the room, wall decor, pillows and any other accessories you feel the room needs .

The console table is 67″w and the wall is 107″w. The wall that houses the cabinet is 41″w. There is 30″ of wall above the batten.

Construction finished 10 months ago but the room is far from being complete!!!! Help!

Michelle,

“Kudos” for the great job you have done in remodeling your family room … it looks fantastic! Adding a few accessories, pillows and a pop of color here and there will give the finished room that you want.

Try following the “less is more” attitude when adding accessories.  Instead of different sizes and shapes on top of the lonesome television cabinet, consider placing three objects of the same kind together. We suggest three decorative boxes in a row or how about three of our Dome Boxwoods in a row? Simple but nice.

Your new mantle is exciting and we recommend placing a piece art above it that provides a bold statement of color … like our White Poppies Floral Giclee.  Keep the accessories to a minimum and unified in color. We suggest a few pieces of pottery from our Casa Florentina Collection in a limed finish. Cozy up your hearth with a couple of baskets to keep your blankets or magazines tidy. Toss some  fabulous pillows on your sofa in Velvet Pumpkin, Danish Linen and Velvet Chocolate, and maybe a lumbar in Ashford Paisley. Place our Ethan Tray Table by your sofa to provide a spot for the morning paper and coffee.

Consider grouping existing accessories on your console table for a stronger statement and then hang our Carollton Oval Mirror horizontally above the it. For an unexpected surprise, surround the mirror with Atelier Antlers by Suzanne Kasler.

The chest in the back of the room is a great place to add a clock along with our Leonce Lamp in a brass finish. Next to the lamp, we recommend adding our Arts & Crafts Stairs for a fabulous conversation piece. Another suggestion is adding drapery panels in Document fabric to soften up your sliding glass wall. For simple functionality, draw them back to the right side of the door. Another thought for using this fabric is bar chair cushions!

The energy you have put into your space is evident. With a little more time and a few carefully placed objects, your room will feel complete and look beautiful! We can’t wait to see the final results so make sure you send us pictures!
