Dear Style Studio,
We have a 1960’s home and we have renovated part of the living room. To lighten the room we painted the brick a light cream and replaced the carpet.
I am now in a dilemma on what furniture to buy and where to place it. The living room is 12 x 21 with a fireplace and door, which we don’t use on one end and an entrance from the hallway on the other.
I could really use your assistance as I am stuck on what to do.
Thank you,
Yvonne
Yvonne,
Congratulations on your first step of renovation. It’s always exciting to create a fresh start!
Because of the size and shape of the room, we think the current furniture layout is the best for your space. As you replace your pieces, purchase with a plan in mind so you will finish with a cohesive look that is comfortable. A plan is what we have provided for you.
Start with a comfortable sofa and loveseat like our Baldwin Collection. With this group can be ordered with a washable slipcover so your new pieces have easy care. We suggest trying the slipcover in Butter Twill to really play off the warm tones in your paneling. Toss in throw pillows in Dafne and French Ticking Blue for a subtle infusion of color.
Next add the Oak Park for a side table and 2 of the Leather Cubes in Loden to serve as a coffee table and an ottoman. Remember to add a table lamp and floor lamp for ambient lighting.
Another way to update your space is with new drapery panels in Callisto Stripe Chocolate mounted very close to the ceiling on a black iron rod. Placing them close to the ceiling gives the illusion of taller windows.
Above your fireplace, we recommend adding Patchwork Prints in blue to create additional color in your room.
The corner is the best spot for your television so we suggest including a piece that will really create a sense of purpose … the San Marino Corner Cabinet in a limed finish! This piece will show beautifully against the warmth of the wood walls.
Since you don’t use the door, consider camouflaging it with a large mirror or a drapery panel hung at the same height as the rest of your curtain panels.
One more thought … we suggest hanging your current sofa pictures much closer together. This will give the 3 pieces a greater impact in the room.
Happy Decorating!
