Sitting/Formal Dining Room Combo

Dear Style Studio,

I don’t know where to begin for our sitting area, which is in the same room as our formal dining. The whole room measures 20-by-11. We like our dining furniture, but still I can’t find inspiration just based on that.

The table measures 100 inches long. We will use this space as an area to visit with guests before and after we dine in the formal dining area, and as an area to sit and read.

How could we best utilize this space, and what is a color scheme we can go off of? I’m not sure whether to paint this room or not. I’ve found that I’ve felt limited with what decor/furniture to buy by trying to go off of what’s on the walls already, and I don’t have an attachment to the colors.

I greatly appreciate your input on colors/decor/furniture. Thank you!

Karen,

Your dining table and chairs are a great starting point for styling the extension of your room. We think the suggestions made below will finish off your space and provide an area ready for entertaining.

Repainting a room is where you can get the “biggest bang for your buck”! We recommend that you paint your space a soft neutral with just a whisper of blue/green pigment. A great color is Benjamin Moore – Ashwood OC-47.

All good rooms start with a rug. We suggest the Cynthia Rug for your start. The colors create a soft mood perfect for dining. Now place the Montauk Settee, adorned with pillows in Velvet Celadon and Belgrano Ikat Spa, in front of the window. In front of the settee, place the small Morgan Cocktail table in a black finish for serving hors d’oeuvres before dinner.

We recommend flanking the settee with our Larkin chairs covered in Document Spa. Don’t forget to add small side tables beside the chairs to hold drinks.

Soften the corner of your windows with drapery panels in Trilby Basketweave Natural. On each side of your centered window, add a Grand Tour Etagere in black.

To give the other end of the room the same grand presence, hang our Laraine Mirror at the head of the table to reflect the light from lit candles and your chandelier. Consider adding shades to your chandelier as a finishing touch.

We know you will make great memories in the future from all the entertaining in your lovely space.

Happy Decorating!
