How to Mix and Match Patterned Bedding

This blog post about How to Mix and Match Patterned Bedding was originally published in 2014 and was updated in August 2023.

Mixing and matching bedding is one of our favorite ways to add pattern and depth to a bedroom. Plus, all of our bedding collections are designed to go together, so no matter the combination, the final result is sure to look cohesive.

To help get you started, we gathered some tried and true tips to mix and match bedding like a pro. You’ll have a beautifully layered bed in no time!

First, Start with Quality Bedding Basics

You’re going to want to start your bedding journey with a strong foundation: a statement headboard, luxuriously soft sheets and a classic bed skirt.

  • A statement headboard: Without a proper headboard, a bed is really just a mattress. That’s why we opt for something dramatic like our Villandry Cane Headboard to help set the scene of a bedroom before searching for bedding or complimentary pieces.
  • Luxuriously soft sheets: In the images above, we dressed the beds with sheets and shams from our Belíssima Linen Collection. These breathable, year-round sheets are garment washed for an incredibly soft hand, thick luxurious drape, and casually rumpled look. We gravitate towards linen becuase it gets softer and more enticing with every wash.
  • A classic bed skirt: bed skirts are a great way to complete the textured or layered look of a bed once you’ve picked your headboard and sheet sets. We can’t get enough of scalloped and pom pom edges in our bed skirts, but there are so many other options to choose from in the Ballard Designs catalog.

The next step in mixing and matching bedding involves pattern and color. Pick a print you love and make sure to use related colors that share the same hue. Sticking with one color will help unify the overall look.

As you can see above, the combination of a scalloped edges and bold florals is a bit unexpected, but it works so well because they’re in the same green family.

Vary the Patterns

Another way to keep the mix pleasing to the eye is selecting a variety of patterns in different sizes, shapes and styles. Almost any print, from floral to leopard to tribal, plays well with the linear design of stripes.

There are so many different ways to mix patterns and fabrics we’d love to tell you about, but we think our friends Cate Dunning and Lathem Gordon do it best in our exclusive designer interview below.

Play with Texture

Finally, unexpected pairings are all the more beautiful by varying texture. It’s a definite way to create visual depth and reflect the mood of your room. For example, a pom pom trim lends a fun and frilly touch to a crisp, clean duvet. Texture can also come from a fabric’s thickness or stitching.

Our top trick for styling a bed is layering duvets and quilts together to achieve a dreamy mix of textures. Depending on the level of warmth you want, cover your bed with one and fold the other at the foot of your bed.

Hi! I was wondering if someone could tell me where the bedframe is from in the picture with the purple quilt and the white bedside tables? It’s the light wood one and it is beautiful! 😍

Could you tell me the color of the ticking stripe above? I’m having a hard time telling if it is navy or black.

    Hi:

I would like to register for some of the mix and match spa colored bedding for my wedding. It is hard to tell from pictures on the website whether it is more green or blue, however. Could you help me? Thanks.

      Hi Meghan,
Unfortunately we aren’t able to send swatches of our bedding items at this time, but you could order a sham of the bedding collection just to see how the color is in real life. I will say that our spa color is a blend of green and blue. There is more blue, but the photos are a pretty accurate portrayal of the shade! I’m sorry I can’t be of more help, but I hope that answers your question!

Amy from above, I should add that our walls are neutral (Sherwin Williams Kilim Beige), and we do not intend to paint them anytime soon due to a variety of other home projects. I would like to bring a little more color into the room.
    Thank you!

I have the Caroline quilt, and I am looking for drapes that will go. Would any of the items at Ballard that have “spa” indicated as the color match the “spa” color that is one the reverse of the Caroline quilt? What Ballard drapes do you recommend with the Caroline quilt?

    Thank you,
    Amy

      Hi Amy,
Thanks for your comment! Any items with the same name of Spa should match either exactly or very, very closely to the spa on the Caroline quilt. For many of our fabric items, you can also order a swatch just in case you want to be sure!

As far as drapery, we have a few suggestions for you. Our Sheer Linen Drape in Natural would be a lovely complement to the Caroline Quilt. We love the casual look of the tie top, and the sheerness will keep your bedroom light and airy. For something with more weight, we might suggest our Suzanne Kasler in Linen, Parchment, or Mineral all of which should pair well with the Caroline Quilt.

      Hope that helps!

I have the camden tufted king headboard in the parchment color. It is difficult to choose a wall color for this!
Do you happen to have any suggestions??
The color on the website with the headboard is a greenish/bluish and I like that look.
Any idea what this paint color is called?
We are remodeling the adjacent bathroom and are about to paint the bedroom as well.

    Thanks!

      Hi Kim,
Why don’t you try matching the paint color in the photo you mentioned using the Benjamin Moore color app? We’ve found it to be super helpful! That way you can get the exact look you already know you love in the photo 🙂
      Hope that helps,

I have gold colored walls and a gray headboard. How can I coordinate gold & gray bedding from your collection – I prefer a duvet and I like the toile pattern.

It has been a while since I bought a quilt and pillow covers from Ballard. I have to say that I a so disappointed that I cannot view the entire line of bedding at once. It seems that you want the decorators to help everyone even if they do not desire it. Is there another way to view all? Becky

Hi, my bedroom walls are a brown/taupe color. Alot of black and white pictures in black frames and a dark velvet purple chair. Yes, a dark velvet purple, high back chair and a matching bench at foot of a king bed. I’m wanting to use your burlap natural bedskirt and a white fluffy comforter. What comforter and pillows do you suggest with what I’ve described?
    Thanks, Jane
