Tips for Decorating an Open Floor Plan

Tips for decorating an open floor plan

As soon as we saw this space from interior designer and blogger Sita Montgomery, we couldn’t wait to share it here on How to Decorate! We love the way Sita uses a happy shades of coral as exclamation marks around this primarily neutral great room. Each space feels defined but still cohesive, which can be a tricky balance in an open floor plan. Luckily, Sita walks us through her favorite ways to bring purpose and pretty to this space.

A home with an open floor plan most often has one common larger room, in some cases the combination of the kitchen, living and dining room areas. There are many benefits to choosing an open floor plan. Less walls to separate rooms means the greater the ability to benefit from natural sunlight and fewer confined areas offer the illusion of more space. Decorating an open floor plan to create one beautiful, cohesive space can be difficult. Here are a few of my favorite tips on how to tackle this decorating challenge.

[/fusion_builder_column][fusion_builder_column type=”1_1″ background_position=”left top” background_color=”” border_size=”” border_color=”” border_style=”solid” spacing=”yes” background_image=”” background_repeat=”no-repeat” padding=”” margin_top=”0px” margin_bottom=”0px” class=”” id=”” animation_type=”” animation_speed=”0.3″ animation_direction=”left” hide_on_mobile=”no” center_content=”no” min_height=”none”]

Define it

Use furniture to create and differentiate areas in the space. A console table or buffet behind a sofa can help to distinguish the living area from the entry or dining space. This can also be accomplished with the use of area rugs. A rug under a dining table or seating positioned around a large rug can create an area with a distinct function in the open space.

[/fusion_builder_column][fusion_builder_column type=”1_1″ background_position=”left top” background_color=”” border_size=”” border_color=”” border_style=”solid” spacing=”yes” background_image=”” background_repeat=”no-repeat” padding=”” margin_top=”0px” margin_bottom=”0px” class=”” id=”” animation_type=”” animation_speed=”0.3″ animation_direction=”left” hide_on_mobile=”no” center_content=”no” min_height=”none”]

[/fusion_builder_column][fusion_builder_column type=”1_1″ background_position=”left top” background_color=”” border_size=”” border_color=”” border_style=”solid” spacing=”yes” background_image=”” background_repeat=”no-repeat” padding=”” margin_top=”0px” margin_bottom=”0px” class=”” id=”” animation_type=”” animation_speed=”0.3″ animation_direction=”left” hide_on_mobile=”no” center_content=”no” min_height=”none”]

Make it interesting

Open floor plans tend to have one color on the wall. Adding interest to the them by either using wallpaper or wood trim is a great way to not only create interest on the walls, but they can also aid in defining areas in the larger room. I used wallpaper in this entry and added wood trim in the living room to break up the color on the walls and help distinguish the spaces from one another. Hanging artwork and mirrors is another way to achieve this effect.

[/fusion_builder_column][fusion_builder_column type=”1_1″ background_position=”left top” background_color=”” border_size=”” border_color=”” border_style=”solid” spacing=”yes” background_image=”” background_repeat=”no-repeat” padding=”” margin_top=”0px” margin_bottom=”0px” class=”” id=”” animation_type=”” animation_speed=”0.3″ animation_direction=”left” hide_on_mobile=”no” center_content=”no” min_height=”none”]

Color coordinate it

Pick a color palette for the room and incorporate it into each individual space. Choose 2 or 3 accent colors and add a touch of them to each area in the the form of fabrics, rugs and accessories. An entry rug, a pillow on the sofa, a runner on the dining table and window treatments in the kitchen, all featuring the same color palette, will help create a cohesive and unified look between the individual areas in an open floor plan.

[/fusion_builder_column][fusion_builder_column type=”1_1″ background_position=”left top” background_color=”” border_size=”” border_color=”” border_style=”solid” spacing=”yes” background_image=”” background_repeat=”no-repeat” padding=”” margin_top=”0px” margin_bottom=”0px” class=”” id=”” animation_type=”” animation_speed=”0.3″ animation_direction=”left” hide_on_mobile=”no” center_content=”no” min_height=”none”]

[/fusion_builder_column][fusion_builder_column type=”1_1″ background_position=”left top” background_color=”” border_size=”” border_color=”” border_style=”solid” spacing=”yes” background_image=”” background_repeat=”no-repeat” padding=”” margin_top=”0px” margin_bottom=”0px” class=”” id=”” animation_type=”” animation_speed=”0.3″ animation_direction=”left” hide_on_mobile=”no” center_content=”no” min_height=”none”]

Light it up

One of the great features of an open floor plan is the natural sunlight that can flood the space. Ceiling lights and recessed lighting are often used to light up the room in the evening hours. Turn off those ceiling lights and create intimacy in an open floor plan by integrating multiple sources of lighting throughout the space. A pair of table lamps on an entry console or dining buffet, a floor lamp in the living room or a reading lamp on a table by a chair, will light up individual areas and can help give the large room a cozier feel, when desired.

      Hi Anna,
Unfortunately, we don’t have any information about where the glass console table is from! I’m so sorry. But, here are two similar options. The Grand Marquis Console and the Anduze Nesting Console Tables.
Hope you find what you’re looking for!

      Hi Tiffany,
Unfortunately, we do not have the exact source for that velvet fabric. However, we do sell a velvet in a very similar coral, our Our Queens Velvet in Coral. You can see the exact color by ordering a swatch!
      Hope that helps,

When one has an open floor plan do all the metals need to be of the same metal colors? I have brushed antique brass in the living room on knobs, ceiling fan, and coffee table, and was wondering when renovating my kitchen soon, will it be ok to introduce brushed nickel to the kitchen on the hardward or leave cabinets hardward off in kitchen for a more cohesive look? Is antique brass no longer in style? I’m not really fond of the dark metals? Thks

      Hi Suzy,
We definitely think it is okay to mix metals, especially in a space as large as an open floor plan living, dining, and kitchen! A good rule of thumb to keep in mind is that you should use each metal 2-3 times. So we think that if your kitchen hardware is brushed nickel and you have several antique brass metals throughout your living room, this shouldn’t be an issue!
      Hope this helps,

A open space home really makes the area looks bigger in comparison to one with divisions. Nevertheless, you will have to take extra care in designing, since you will have to, as you mentioned, color coordinate and make it interesting.

    Hi!

I love all of the light / neutrals you put together in these rooms with the pops of accent colors. Love the scale of everything as well, I think that is really important.
I did want to ask where I might could find a console table like the one that is used behind the sette / sofa?

    Cant wait to see more!

      Hi Hannah,

Thanks for your comment! We love this space too. You’re right, the scale makes this space so comfortable! As far as the table behind the soda, we have a couple of options that have a similar look and feel, like our Grand Marquis Console, our Renard Console, or our Castellon Console! Hope that helps.

      Happy Decorating!

    Hi,
Just wanted to add, after reading these comments, that I have recently purchased several items from Ballard (wall art, desk, etc) and their service and quality is great. The only thing is that their items are pricey, but when it comes to good taste and quality you won’t regret paying for it. I’ m planning to order more in the near future.

    Ediyh,

I would advise you NOT to buy from Ballard!!!!! I ordered two sofas from them 3 months ago and last week finally received the two slip overs. When I called to inquire about the sofas I was told that they never ordered the sofas. They did however charge me for them and that money was taken out of my bank account last month. I spoke with. Them and asked how they were going to fix the problem and when I would get my sofas and they replied in 10 weeks!!!! They have very little integrity and obviously do not care about their customers, so beware anyone considering a purchase here!
