Our Love for Oushak Rugs

oushak_rugs_2Although Oushak rugs (pronounced ooh-shack) date back to the 15th century, the style is as chic as ever – and has become the rug of choice for many of today’s designers. Originating from a Turkish town in the Anatolian Region called Usak, the ancient flat-woven rug possesses a versatility with a perfect blend of old and modern that seems to work in any style interior – which is exactly why the style is so popular. Throw down an Oushak, like our Valentino Rug (pictured above), and you’ll add instant polish without the fuss.

Oushak-Style Rugs from Ballard Designs

Oushak rugs are known for their distinct, richly faded hues that lend a naturally aged patina. The beauty of their washed palettes means these rugs can work like a neutral and play off your room’s existing furniture – so there’s no need to buy new curtains or pillows to make your new rug work. (Unless you’re looking for an excuse to, of course.)

And if you own an Oushak, you’ll notice that it never looks exactly the same. Depending on the pile direction, weaving technique, luster of the wool and even the amount of daylight in the room, the color intensity varies depending on the angle you’re viewing it from. This chameleon-like quality only adds to its appeal!

Sheridan rug from Ballard Designs

Originally woven by Turkish nomads, Oushak rugs feature a loosely knotted construction, as opposed to the more formal look of a tightly woven Persian rug. You can see the knotted look in our Sheridan Rug above. Their casual, nomad construction influenced the pattern as well: Oushaks are known for their more grand-scale designs. Typically based on open, airy geometric motifs, these rugs often feature a large, central medallion with trailing vines and palmettes. Which is one more thing to love about them: their classical motifs are bound to outlast any current trend – and fickle tastes, too.

So if you’re looking for a rug that exudes casual elegance and looks as if it’s been living in your sun-filled room for years, then you might want to consider one of our Oushak-style rugs.

Top Photo of the cream colored sofa: what is the model and name of that and is it available in apartment-size: larger than a love seat but smaller than 80 inches (w)?
    Thanks!

    Hi:

How do I decorate top of my fire place? Very similar to the picture above. Love to introduce a color but afair, leather tufted couch in eggshell color, walls are rich beige, shutters and fireplace is white.

      Hi Sherry,

Thanks for your comment! We would suggest first picking a piece of artwork that you really love. Try to shoot for something about 2/3 the width of your fireplace for size, and just pick a subject that really speaks to you. Then, once you’ve chosen some artwork that you really love, try pulling colors from the art piece into some accessories to artfully display on the mantel.

For example, we think this piece Emerald Lake would look really lovely over a mantel. To place on the mantel, we would pair with it a preserved boxwood topiary to pull the greens from the painting, and perhaps some urns or demijohns in a pretty green color.

      Hope that helps!

Do you have any more photos of the Bella Rug other than what is on the ballard web page?

      Hi Ruthanna,

Aside from the images on the Bella Rug product page on Ballarddesigns.com, you can actually see an up-close photo of the Bella rug in the third image of this blogpost. It should give you a feel for the pile of the rug and softness!

      Hope that helps.
