Decorating Dilemma: Cindy’s Family Room

Design inspiration for a family room

Decorating Dilemmas is a weekly column in which our stylists answer your design questions, so you can tackle your home decorating project with complete confidence.

Dear How to Decorate,

Our breakfast, kitchen and family room is in one big area, and  I’m trying to finish my family room. I purchased a leather couch and a big mirror over the couch. The mirror is skinner that I expected and doesn’t look right! I am thinking about buying one more mirror and putting it right next to each other and then maybe scones on each side. What do you think? Also, I am wondering if I should change this couch to a sectional and two single chairs across? Or keep the leather couch and buy a chair? I don’t know how to furnish the opposite side. I need recommendations on what kind of chairs, colors and where to place them. I have an arch antiqued leaner mirror in my living room so do not recommend that please. So looking forward to hearing from you!

Thanks,

Cindy

Leather sofa

Dear Cindy,

Thank you for your Decorating Dilemma. We love the neutral tones and the texture you have in this open space. Adding the finishing touches to this space will complete your room.

The wall above the chocolate leather sofa can be filled out with additional pieces even though the mirror is skinnier then you thought. You can make it work by adding some large sconces on either side. We think two Cartagena sconces will help bring in some of the iron detail you have in your dining room.

There is no need to change the sofa, just bring in extra seating to complete your conversational group.  Simply add two chairs opposite the fireplace. We suggest our Larkin Swivel Chair in the Bradley Stripe. These fantastic chairs paired with the Olivia end table will provide a great combination that will soften your space. Also consider adding two leather X-benches in your other space opposite your sofa. The below space plan is how we see the space looking.

This has been very helpful to me. My family room is very much like this one. I will need to purchase the chairs when I can, don’t think it will be long. I would very much like to know what is at the end of the room opposite the couch.
My room does have a door to the right of the couch, it should work, I think. I now have a large ottoman where she has a trunk, should I change to something else.
