Decorating Dilemmas is a weekly column in which our stylists answer your design questions, so you can tackle your home decorating project with complete confidence.
Dear How to Decorate,
I would love some help creating a cozy bedroom with more character. I love the color of our bedroom and our bed. However, the bed linens are less than inspiring. We would love a crisp, clean cottage feel. We also feel the wardrobe and other furnishings simply don’t go with our paint color or the look we are hoping to achieve.
Any help would be greatly appreciated.
Thank you,
Lori
Dear Lori,
What a lovely room. For a cozy cottage look, we will lighten, soften and accessorize. You have some wonderful pieces that will work well in the room. Let’s start by layering in a little color and pattern!
The Amelie Embroidered Duvet and Bedskirt in Spa on your bed will create the crisp look you are after with a hint of fresh color. You can layer in some Euro Shams in the Audree Pom Pom in Spa and Ava Block Print Standard Shams in Spa to mix things up and create a cozy bed. Fold your plaid comforter and place it at the foot of the bed. Add an Anna Table Lamp on the dark bedside table and the Grayson Bench in natural at the end of the bed for a collected look. Soften your windows with the Bingham Printed Panels in Spa.
We like the idea of adding an Amberly Wing Chair in a subtle pattern, like our Chippendale in spa, on the wall along side your slipcovered wing chair. We would also suggest adding a side table, like our Contessa Side Table between them. Gather your small art from over the desk and the bed and group it together lower on the wall between the two chairs. Your floor lamp will be lovely and useful there still.
Across the room, we love the idea of using the desk as a dressing table. You can center a small mirror on the wall in front of the desk. Place two large Suzanne Kassler Jacque Brackets in cream on either side of the mirror and top with some small framed art like the Heines Botanical Framed Art. Pull your small bench over for seating. Perhaps you can place a white linen table runner across the desk to add a little lightness there. A small Lauren Lamp in French Blue would be useful and attractive here along with some small framed photos and a tray with some of your beautiful perfume bottles.
We think it’s a great start to your cozy cottage bedroom.
Happy Decorating!

you suggested adding a bed skirt to this bed. how would you do that with the wood frame going around it? would that look right? just curious because I have the same dilemma.
Caroline @ How to Decorate
Hi Tiffanie,
Thanks for your comment. We don’t see any reason why you can’t add a bedskirt to a bed with a wooden frame. Yes, the top portion of the bedskirt will most likely be hidden behind wood, but there isn’t an issue with that. If you’re worried about it looking to busy, maybe try a bedskirt that is more tailored, like a simple pleat rather than something gathered.
Hope that helps,
