If you’ve flipped through the pages of our summer catalog, you’ve probably noticed that we’ve loved infusing all of our pages with a coastal vibe. Whether it’s strong navy-and-white color palette, soft sandy neutrals with hints of the sea, or a light watery aqua from top to bottom, ‘coastal’ always feel fresh and relaxing, a Ballard Designs favorite! Inspired by the spaces in our Summer 2014 catalog, we’ve broken down exactly how to get that coastal look straight from our pages to the web!
Inspired by our Blue and White Porcelain Vases, we designed this space around an indigo and white color palette. Heavy doses of white, like our wall color and our favorite Sofia Sofa, and open furniture like our Olivia Cocktail Table and our Sonoma Bookcase, keep the space feeling open and airy, a must when designing a coastal space, while a large-scale print like our Tybee Blue Fabric brings that laid-back beachy vibe without the need for seashells. But we couldn’t stop with our Tybee Blue pattern, we worked in our Ikat Stipe Pillows and our Blue Geranium Art! To finish off the space, we used tons of natural materials, like our Braided Jute Rug, preserved boxwoods, and even some fresh hydrangeas for the perfect summer touch.

I have recently been collecting blue & white and have a navy rug in my breakfast room but would like to also like to have some botanical prints with a pop of color. The walls are pale yellow on top and Muslin on bottom with glossy white trim on the crown and chair rail. The chandelier has ballards linen with mustard shades and one wall has 4 of the Ballard mirrors. The opposite wall has a Nutone breaking up the wall and not sure what type of gallery to do on that wall. There are only three walls the fourth wall is a French door. The wall opposite the French door has a bakers rack and I have a 42″ round table with a wood top and wrought iron base. The room is only 8′ x 10′. We live in a coastal/tropical area but the house is fairly traditional in style but I’m kinda sassy. Help.

I love everything about his room! The fabric and rug textures are perfect for creating a warm and inviting space. The lines on the sofa — ahhh, so beautiful! And slipper chairs are my fave. They work so well in small spaces. Really nice!

I want to do my dining area with a couch like seating. It is open to the kitchen and living room in living room I have a black leather sectional sofa. What do you suggest?
Caroline @ How to Decorate
Hi Sharon,
It’s hard to say what will work best in your space without seeing it, but we would suggest the Hampton Upholstered Bench with nailhead trim. The nailheads and angular back will be strong enough to balance your leather sectional, and in a fabric that speaks to black leather, we think this could work nicely. Perhaps our Vintage Ticking Stripe in Black or a Black Velvet!
