This post about mixing wood tones was updated June of 2024.
Let’s all sing it from the mountain tops: The days of matching wood tones and furniture sets are *finally* a thing of the past.
When all of the wood surfaces in a single space share the same tone, nothing stands out and the room falls flat. However, allowing various dark and light wood finishes to coexist can result in a layered look that lends the right amount of texture and depth. The overall feel is more organic, as if individual pieces have been collected over time.
There is no magic formula when it comes to mixing wood furniture finishes, but today’s decorating guide is here to help establish a few guidelines to help every home decorator find their footing.
Contrast Wood Furniture and Flooring
Furnishings can get lost against the backdrop of a similarly toned wood floor. Break up the monotony by pairing light furniture with flooring that has a darker stain—as we did here—or vice versa.
Start with An Anchor Piece
An easy way to create impact is by using a larger piece of wood furniture, such as a coffee table or buffet, as your starting point and mixing in two to three contrasting wood tones around it. You can always experiment by switching out wood accessories to see what appeals to you.
Create a Harmonious Balance
To prevent your room from looking lopsided, balance different wood finishes throughout your space. Here, the dark-stained floating shelves ground the room, allowing the whitewashed elements to have a greater contrast for an airy effect.
Pick a Dominant Wood Tone
Nothing says you have to go crazy mixing wood tones, especially if you’re feeling a bit out of your element. Here, the neutral, beige stain of the wall adds just enough contrast while letting the dramatic wood wall frames and dining table to anchor the space.
Create Continuity with Accent Color
If you’re worried your mismatched wood grains have gotten out of hand, tie the different finishes and styles together with an accent color. Here, we used some accessories—throw pillows, lamp shade and drapery—to create a harmonious flow through a neutral color.
Soften the Mixed Wood Tones with a Rug
When you’ve got a lot of legs in various wood tones, give them common ground with an area rug. A rug also helps to create a soothing transition between the furniture and wood floor.

My living room has cherry wood furniture, because of my house being so small I need to put in a small dining table. Would a white painted dining table fit with the Cherry wood furniture or would a dark brown or brown be a better choice? My flooring is upgraded vinyl planking in a grey with splash of taupe. Thanks.
Kelley Bostian
Hello Monique,
Thanks for reading the How to Decorate blog and reaching out with such a great question: We think painted white wood could work well in the space you’re describing. If you feel unsure, however, give our recently published How to Mix Wood Tones video a watch to see all the options you could have in this scenario. Always start small with swatches first to see how it feels in the conditions of your space before making a big purchase you could regret later!
Hope this helps and happy decorating,
Kelley

I am redecorating my large dining room. My set is an ivory wood color, which I love!
Can I incorporate an antique dark wood china closet that is very different (and smaller) than the original piece? It would be perfect to display my Beleek collection… thanks, Rita
Kelley Bostian
Hi Rita,
Yes, you can absolutely incorporate your antique dark wood china closet with your ivory wood set! Check out our recent video on Mixing Wood Tones to learn some easy tips and tricks about combining contrasting wood furniture in an existing space.

Hi,
Is it okay to mix black furniture with wood furniture? I have a rustic brown console table (with black in it) and two cherry/glass end tables. I want to get a black tv stand, and a coffee table (I’m not sure what color the coffee table should be yet.)
Caroline McDonald
Yes, absolutely! Black is a great anchor, and some designers even say that every room needs a little black.
Thanks for your comment.

Hi
Could you tell me what two rugs are used in the first photo?
Thanks

I’m in love with the wall decor in the third picture! The wooden one with the white rectangle and circle. Is that from Ballard? Is there a way I can find it? I don’t see it in the website. I have been searching for the perfect piece for a spot in my living room and that is perfect!!
Caroline McDonald
Sandra,
So glad you like this piece. Unfortunately we do not carry this design anymore. We have a few things that are similar if you’d like to browse our wall decor options.

Our home is traditional/victorian which includes deep walnut wood trim throughout. I want to create a warm cozy environment. How do I use furniture to tone down the boldness of the wood throughout? The bigger question is should I do whitewash wood, cream, gray, or walnut for tables, etc?

I am building a small guest house (800 sf) and the living room/kitchen are open and a combined space. I am using a dark gray cabinet in the kitchen with a creamy, light granite.
In the living room I am having a cabinet wall unit/book shelves built around the TV. I was going to make them white but now am wondering if I should match the kitchen cabinets. Does it matter to have two colors so close to each other?
Abbey Nolte
Hi Diane,
It sounds like those colors will mix well together so go for it!

Thanks for the help. I have a cherry bedroom set but want to upgrade my bed to a king. I kinda dont want to do another cherry bed. Right now its all too matchy. What color woods would go and what should I stay away from.

Can you tell me the paint colors used in the second and sixty photo in this post?

Jennifer,
Unfortunately I don’t have information on the paint. I would suggest showing this picture at the paint store and they can match it for you.

Hi, hope to get some ideas. I have a wood bookshelf (starmore) I bought for a formal living room. I was going to put it on a wall with accent chairs in front of it with a small ottoman. The room has a bay window with a built in bench. What colors can I do?
Can I get away with black white and yellows. I love yellows and blue.
It’s the first room you see when you enter my house, it is in the front so it’s vert bright, which I like. Please help

Thank you for this informational post! I am furnishing our master bedroom and love the Claudette headboard in white and the Serpentine side tables in Swedish oak. I am a little bit stumped when shopping for dressers and chests to coordinate though. Since those pieces are going to be rather large, would they be considered the anchor pieces rather than the headboard? Should I go with dressers/chests in white/whitewashes to coordinate with the headboard, try to match the Swedish oak sidetables or go rogue with something like black? I am picturing gingham/buffalo check bedding with a coordinating floral in cranberry/cream/black. Any advice would be greatly appreciated! Thanks!
Caroline McDonald
Mandy,
I think either a white/whitewashed wood and black or something else entirely could be pretty. I’ve seen metal dressers out there. But since I’m assuming the dresser and headboard won’t be right up against each other, I think white would be fine. And black would work too.
This sounds like it’ll be such a pretty combination!
Happy decorating,
Caroline

Caroline McDonald, thank you for input. Deciding on the color of my 6” sofa legs. When I said the wood for the legs was a “medium brown”, I should have mentioned it has a little red in it. I have parquet floors (will be purchasing an area rug) and it does pick up one of the wood colors in the parquet . My sales lady still believes I should use the espresso colored legs for a contemporary look, just seems so cold next to my wood floors. Now that you know it’s not just a medium brown color, does this change your mind?
Caroline McDonald
It’s hard to say without seeing photos of your space and the wood swatch itself, but I don’t think there’s really a right or wrong answer. You might also have this sofa for longer than you live in your house. Perhaps you move it to another room or move houses. I wouldn’t worry too much about the chair leg. Pick whichever one you like best!
Christine
I will be buying a new sofa (floating) will be a creamy beige with 6” legs. So now the legs are an important wood tone. I know they are showing an espresso color for legs, but would a medium brown leg look out-dated?
Caroline McDonald
Not at all Christine,
It totally depends on your space. You have a few options. You can coordinate the leg to the flooring you have, the other pieces in the room, or just have it work best with the fabric on your sofa.
A medium-brown is definitely not going to look outdated though!
Good luck,
Caroline

Forgot to make my question clear 😉
Hi!
We could really use your help ASAP! I am hoping we can put a roll top (beautiful – unique), on one side of our white brick fireplace (traditional black gas) – it would stick out about 6 inches, and a butler’s pantry (unique sideboard) on the other side – lake side. It would stick out about an inch maybe. (The outside of the home is a kind of beachy modern design with hardy shingles in cobbletstone colour.)
Can these 2 antiques “frame” our fireplace? I would send a picture, but I don’t see where to upload it.
Thanks in advance 🙂

Hello,
I have just bought a new house, and am trying to figure out what kind of wood frame bed would suit my bedroom.
The floors are a light cherry wood. Extra shiny.
The bed I’d like to buy is a flat birch.
Would this work?
Many thanks!

Hello,
I have a dark brown wood floor in the children’s bedroom. I wonder if it would be ok to buy white bedroom furniture for them.
I also wonder if I should use matching fabric colors for the dining chairs and the sofa in the living area, given that they are all in one open space.
Finally , I would like to know if it would be fine to mix golden metal coffee tables with a dining table and a buffet made of dark brown and light brown wood.
Thank you

We just bought a new house that has never been lived in… brand new construction with a blank slate for decorating. The home is completely empty so we will be decorating from scratch. The main area is an open floor plan with kitchen (gray granite counter tops/white cabinets/stainless appliances) flowing into living room and a small dining area as well. The entire first floor has light bamboo hardwood flooring, which is beautiful but I am struggling to figure out furniture choices… do I need to worry about things matching the color of the wood floor, (barstool legs, sofa feet, coffee table frames, chairs and whatnot). We will definitely be doing some upholstered pieces but don’t know how to think about the different shades of wood in one large space that has different living areas… HELP!
Mallory Thomas
Wendy,
Congrats on your new house! I suggest connecting with our design services team in stores or online. They’d be able to look at your space and make appropriate furniture suggestions. You can sign up for an email or online consultation here.

Thanks for the inspiration! I have (and love) dark wood furniture, but I am considering buying a new home that has light gray cabinets and white countertops in the kitchen. Do I need all new furniture, or can the house still flow?
Heather Daly
Hi Tiffany,
Congratulations on the new home! The dark wood still sounds like it could work with your new kitchen. Mixing in darker wood tones with lighter fixtures can give depth to a room. You may consider adding light colored upholstered chairs or fun lighting to incorporate everything together.
Good Luck!
Mollie
I have a dark gray wood and chrome coffee table in my living room with a lighter gray wood and gunmetal L-shaped desk in the corner of the room for our office space. What material do I use for the tv stand and book shelves that we plan on purchasing? Everything is pretty sleek with a hint of mid-century modern. Any suggestions would be appreciated; thanks!
Heather Daly
Hi Mollie,
Try looking for a media console that pulls one of the wood tones from the other pieces to create some cohesiveness to the space. If you can’t find an exact match, finding a piece with chrome hardware or gunmetal hardware would also help tie elements of the room together.
Lou
should all the shades on the lamps in a living room be the same color? for example with whites and off whites.
Heather Daly
Hi Lou,
Not necessarily. Depending on the room, you could certainly add a colorful pop with a lampshade. However if you have other white lampshades in the room already, we would suggest not adding an off white lampshade into the mix and simply sticking with the prominent color you already have.

I have a king-sized mahagony sleigh bed in my bedroom and a golden oak antique dresser . How can I blend this harmoniously?
Heather Daly
Hi Marge,
Try using an accent color in the room and to create flow between the pieces. You could add blue pillows to the bed, then use that same blue in something like a picture or a lampshade on the dresser. This will create harmony in the room and create a fun mix.
Good Luck!

Jan
Hi
Need some help
I have very dark woodwork and purchased a matte black cherry dining table and chairs, with a turned leg -just cushion seat and wooden backs
Also purchased a dark same wooden tones buffet
Along with a shades of brown granite topped buffet
The bottom of which is yellowish off white.
Both buffets are the same size which I think was a mistake. Your opinion please
and I have a built in china cabinet
I feel there’s too much dark going on but don’t know how to fix it
My carpet is antique look with shades of beige a bit of rust and splashes of blue
I don’t know what color fabric to have on the chairs or what type fabric
Any suggestions
It’s a lively room has three windows on wall opposite the built in cabinet
The walls on either side of the built in cabinet have built in wall shelves as does one other wall
Also ornate pillars that sit on big square blocks as you leave the room
I think this home might be of craftsman design
Any suggestions would be appreciated
The walls are neutral off white
Thank you for your time
Kath
Hi, I need some help in mixing wood color in bedroom. I have a mahogany bed and i’m planning to get a cherry maple side table. Is it okay to have a different color of bed and side table?
Heather Daly
Hi Jan,
Try our tip of using a color to tie it all together. You could try using a lampshade on the side table and a pillow on the bed that are the same color to create harmony and flow. This will take the eye away from the different wood tones and the focus will be on the accent color.
Good Luck!
Bernie
I have solid wood flooring in my dining room the color is a dork brown. My living room is right across from the dining room and has carpet. I would like to put wood in the living room . Can I have different wood colors? Thank you
Caroline McDonald
Bernie,
Since the rooms are adjacent, I’d recommend having them match. You may need to refinish your dining room floors so that they coordinate.
Good luck!
Rae
Hi. We are currently in the process of buying a home that has a reddish looking cherry floor. At first, I wanted to match all the wood furniture such as coffee table, sofa table, entry table with the floors but I don’t want them to get lost by doing that. Would a dark wood like expresso or black furniture look good with the more red cherry floors?
Thanks!
Caroline McDonald
Rae,
Black or espresso are so different, that I think the contrast will be fine! We always recommend mixing wood finishes in a room to get that collected look!
Good luck,
Caroline

My living room is carpeted and I want put wood flooring. I have a built in wall unit (oak stained with nutmeg stain -it is not very dark wood but looking a little yellow depending on lighting). I have cedar tongue in groove walls (darkened from age). Husband refuses to remove the tongue in groove walls or the wall unit. My coffee table is my grandmiothers 100+ yr old cedar hope chest with weathered looking aged brass accent strips on the top and sides. It is a darker wood somewhat like the cedar. I am not sure what color wood flooring-as it will be butting up to the kitchen light tile. I will be purchasing a new couch, end tables and lamps. The dining room is directly next to this room and it is wall panelled (i am having the wall panelling removed and painting the walls). Furniture is a darker oak–with a hutch– Neither room is very bright unless it is a very sunny day (huge tree in front of home). I have a wihte kitchen directly beyond the dining room. I know it is hard without pictures but I am not sure what goes with what. Thank you.
Hope
I have a great room with limited natural light. I’d like to lighten it up by adding a Vintage White entertainment wall unit, but all the wood pieces in the room are dark. I have an open concept floor plan with medium brown hickory wood floors throughout. I have an oriental rug with gold, cream, green, terracotta, red an navy blue colors, and dark wood pieces in the room. My sofa is a light gold color. My kitchen cabinets are creamy white. Can I add vintage white or do I need to go with a lighter wood tone? Thanks!
How to Decorate
Hope,
You most certainly can add a vintage white entertainment unit. In fact, we think it’ll work much better than trying to find a wooden pieces that works with your wood furniture and floors. It’ll be VERY difficult to find something to match, but a painted white piece will work with what you already have.
Best of luck!

My husband insist on keeping a wall shelving unit of original oak with light stain. He won’t let me paint it. Our floor is a grey with brown tones. I am trying to buy bedroom furniture, but don’t know what to buy. Not sure if I should go with a fabric headboard and wood dressers (color?) or what?
Caroline @ How to Decorate
Kim,
We are definite fans of mixing wood finishes, so we don’t think you need to worry too much about the wall shelving unit. With that said, we do think a fabric headboard would be a nice way to keep things from looking too disjointed. When it comes to your dressers, you have a few options:
1. Choose a dresser with a similar finish to your floors. It doesn’t have to be exact, but a similar tone and darkness will help it blend.
2. Choose another completely different wood finish, but use it in several other places throughout the space. Maybe you choose a chair with a coordinating wood finish, or perhaps a tray.
3. Go for something completely different like a painted or mirrored dresser. This way it won’t compete with the floors or the built in shelves.
Happy decorating and good luck!

The lower level of our walkout ranch is all oak. I would like to change the stain of the built in entertainment center to a darker colored stain but do not want to change all the baseboards, trim and doors. Can the entertainment center be treated as a piece of furniture even though it is built in or does it need to match all the other woodwork?
Caroline @ How to Decorate
Melanie,
This is a tough question, especially when we can’t see the space exactly. Generally, it’s tricky to blend differing woods tones of a built in piece with woodwork that will come right up against it. Have you considered painting your built in entertainment center instead? This might be a better solution. You can certainly go darker like you’re wanting with maybe a black or even navy blue paint color, and this will make it so there’s no need to change the stain on your baseboards, trim, and doors.
Best of luck!
Kim
I have a large matte black armoire, a medium gunstock oak floor, side tables with tops the same wood stain as the floor with black iron legs. There’s also a black iron floor lamp. So I guess I have enough black spread around the room to balance the black armoire.
My question is about a coffee table and the legs of the upholstered chairs I haven’t chosen yet but they’ll be in some type of blue and white or soft yellow and white pattern. I have a white slipcovered sofa, pale yellow walls, lots of natural light. Should I stick with wood the color of the floor and side table tops, or maybe black legs on chairs and a coffee table with a wood top and black iron legs? Or would it be better to go with a distressed blue painted coffee table to go with the blues in the room?
I’m trying to keep the room as open and airy as possible, thanks!
Caroline @ How to Decorate
Kim,
It’s hard to say without seeing your room, but generally we don’t think it’s necessary to match the wood of your furniture legs to either your floor or each other! We do like the idea of maybe using a different material altogether like metal or a painted wood.
If you’d like more help, feel free to send your room to our Design Solutions team so they can make some better suggestions. You can do so by submitting this form here.

i need some help with wood tones. I bought the suette couch with cream wood frame and the claudette chair from ethan allen. I have an open floor plan, so my question is can I go with a dark wood tone for my kitchen set and counter stools?
Caroline @ How to Decorate
Janet,
It’s hard to make a suggestion without seeing photos, but generally we don’t think it’s necessary to match all of the wood tones in the room. As long as you have at least 2 uses of each wood tone in the room, they’ll blend together just fine!
Renae Miller
I have a open floor plan – kitchen into living room. Light wood floors and white kitchen cabinets. All trim, doors and staircase is oak. The fireplace mantle, barn doors in living room are cherry colored as well as the dining room table – which is close in proximity to the living room. I would love to stain or paint my staircase a dark java stain but am afraid it would be one more color. I hate the oak staircase but don’t want the expense of installing new!
Caroline @ How to Decorate
Renae,
It’s hard to offer suggestions without seeing your space, but it sounds from your description like there is indeed a lot of different finishes. We typically like to incorporate 1-2 different wood colors (not including painted wood). Maybe consider staining the trim, doors, and staircase to match the floors or perhaps painting them white to match your kitchen cabinets.
Best of luck!

Have you thought about whitewashing with a satin finish? It would incorporate both the wood and the white and give it some texture!

Hallo!
I am a decorator from Cape Town RSA and was wondering what your take would be on decorating a very dark Dining room that has only one small window. My client is a very traditional man and he wants this room to be decorated in the Downton Abby style – here’s my predicament.. he wants it to be light but does not appreciate contemporary design. My understanding of this era is that most fabrics and furniture are dark (with wood panelling). I tried to introduce a more contemporary look with light damask wall paper and lovely velvets but was met with ‘ it’s too plain!’…. Help please!!

Hi Tarah,
Thanks for your comment. Unfortunately those lanterns are discontinued, but we do have a couple of lanterns with a similar feel, like our Sawyer Pendant and our Marcelle Pendant.
