Decorating Dilemma: Stacey’s Family Room for 5

Decorating a large family room for a family of 5

Decorating Dilemmas is a weekly column in which our stylists answer your design questions, so you can tackle your home decorating project with complete confidence.

Dear How to Decorate,

We’ve been in this house a little over a year and a half. The family room is a work in progress. We plan to have built ins installed on either side of the fireplace, as well as a mantle with TV mounted above.

What do you suggest for furniture (which we will be buying new)? How should we set it up? We are a family of 5 so a sectional does tend to work best, but I don’t want it to take up the whole room!

Thanks,

Stacey

Hi Stacey,

A great alternative to built-in shelving on either side of the fireplace would be our Tuscan Large Center Bookcase in Tuscan Brown color to ground the areas on either side of your fireplace. Your planned wood mantle addition would complete this wall, and complement your flat screen above the mantle.

Our Davenport 3-Piece Sectional Sofa (or possibly the 4-piece sectional depending on your available space) slip-covered in Trilby Basketweave Bark is a great choice as the seating foundation for your lovely room. The Zinc Framed Leaner Mirror, mounted horizontally on the wall behind the sofa, will add a great organic element, and reflective light, to your room. The “worn” brown edges will pull in the deep brown wood tones of the Tuscan Bookcases. This warm wood tone can also be repeated by selecting our Morgan Cocktail Table with storage baskets. Placing a Vineyard Stripe rug in navy beneath the sofa and cocktail table to ground your seating area and add a color accent.

Next, bring in two Leyland Chairs upholstered in Davidson Herringbone Indigo to provide comfort and additional seating. Accessories such as our Blue and White Porcelain Vases, when placed on the Tuscan bookcases and cocktail table, will mix delightfully with the navy striped rug and Leyland chairs.

For pillows, we used several navy fabrics (like Quincy Indigo, Ellie Indigo, Toscana Ikat, and a deep teal velvet) to pull all the room colors together. Our Sloan floor lamp will provide reading light and a unique silhouette to your space. If additional wall space permits, the Birdland Artwork would add a vibrant ‘splash’ of color and relate to colors in your brick wall.

Happy Decorating!
