Runway to Room: Top 10 Fall Fashion Trends Translated

 

Every season, we obsessively follow the runway reports of the best collections from New York, London, Milan and Paris. Not only is fashion fun to keep up with, but the latest trends on the catwalk often inspire the design of our homes. While you may not be able to afford this season’s hottest ready-to-wear looks, you can certainly incorporate some of them into your rooms. Here are a few of our favorites from fall 2015 and how we’re translating them.

1. High Shine

From glitzy Lurex to shiny lamé to shimmering sequins, models were draped in metallic fabrics and blinged-out details. We love the way designers accented classic pieces with sparkly broaches and metallic shoes, just as we might accent a room with a glittering mirrored side table.

2. Patchwork

Styles from the seventies rocked the runway, and one of the biggest looks was patchwork. It’s not all that surprising considering the number of fabrics and textures on display in every collection. A  mashup of styles was bound to happen — and with good results. Follow suit in your bedroom with our Annabel Heirloom Patchwork Quilt.

3. Classic White

Pared down silhouettes in the form of a classic white blouse or a lean white dress were on full display, from Michael Kors to Valentino. These looks were a nice reminder that you can never go wrong with the simplicity of white. Take a page from Suzanne Kasler’s design book and go for the all-white room with just a touch of color.

4. Velvet

Velvet in deep, rich hues flourished on the fall runways in every silhouette, including wrap skirts, sleek capes and jumpsuits. Embrace the opulence at home with a pair of plush drapes and matching throw pillows in a bold color that will instantly warm up any room.  

5. Windowpane

What gingham is to spring, windowpane plaid is to fall. Some of our favorite moments featured the sleek, wide checks on everything from trench coats to trousers. Our Dover Linen Fabric by the Yard makes it easy to work the look at home on upholstered furniture, throw pillows, bedding or drapery.

6. Upholstered Fabrics

Ironically, fashion designers took inspiration from our world this season, sending a rich tapestry of fabrics and motifs down the runway that you’d more likely see inside your home, including beautiful brocades, stately damasks and Moroccan rug prints. It can be easy to overdo the look, so just add one or two things in a rich, patterned fabric or throw down a rug for that lush visual texture.

7. Tailored Lines

Menswear-inspired tailored pant suits made an appearance at every show. Recreate the look and feel of timeless tailoring with the clean lines of the Tate Sofa. Just like gold buttons on a blazer, nailheads offer even more polish.

8. Monochromatic Gray

Models layered in head-to-toe gray were everywhere, and it’s easy to see why. The season’s star neutral comes in 50 different shades — and they all work together. The monochromatic look is easy to pull off, whether it’s your wardrobe or your home office.

9. Bohemian Flair

This season’s fashions conjured the eclectic boho vibe of the ‘70s woman, riffing on familiar shapes and fabrics with all of the embellishments. Floaty dresses, tiered tops and wide-legged pants were emblazoned with floral prints, feathers and fringe. Have fun with it and work those textural details into your decor. We don’t know about you, but we can’t get enough of fringe and love it as an accent on our fringed curtains, natural fiber rugs and even dinner napkins.

10. A Touch of Fur

Need a new coat this fall? Expect to find plenty with a fur collar. Furry finishes and shearling trim were spotted on every runway, sewn into the shoulders of coats and even evening dresses at Proenza Schouler. Add a touch of fashionable decadence and toasty warmth to your interiors with a fur throw or pillow.
