Jewel Tones – How to Love Them in Your Interior Design

Few design elements have more of an impact on the feel of your room than color. If you’re looking to bring richness and depth to your room, try jewel tones in your interior design. These deep, saturated colors bring warmth and coziness to a space whether you’re bringing them in as accents or as an overall color palette.

What are Jewel Tones?

They’re exactly what they sound like — deep, rich colors like sapphire, ruby, amethyst, topaz, and emerald. 

Why Jewel Tones All Over?

Not every room has great natural lighting, and if you’re working with an already dark space, it often makes more sense to embrace that dark, moodiness. In the two rooms above, we chose a monotone color palette in rich sapphire and vibrant fire opal red. 

Using these colors on nearly every piece in the room, even adding a jewel tone rug, is certainly dramatic, and it creates a cocoon of color in the space.

Yes! Accessorize with Jewels

While dramatic swathes of jewel tones feel extra luxe, you’re probably more likely to accent with jewel tones in a lighter, brighter space. In this case, think of jewel toned curtains, fabrics, and furniture pieces in the same way you’d think of a great cocktail ring or earrings. They don’t necessarily need to be the focal point of the outfit, but they should play off the anchor pieces you already have.

In the room above, we chose accents of emerald, peridot, and amethyst to bring richness to a living room. Notice that the main elements in the room are neutral — a gray velvet sofa, white case goods, and gold accents. But a few pillows, a vibrant chair, and small decorative touches bring a richness to the space that pastel pieces would not. 

Consider Luster…

One of the main reasons we all love jewels is because of their sparkle. Similarly, bring pieces with a luster into your room to add a luxurious feel. We love velvets and metallic pieces for this reason. A sapphire blue pillow or emerald green jewel tone curtains have a tactile quality and a sheen that add dimension and make a big impact.

Set Them With Metal

Just like the gemstones in your jewelry box, jewel toned furniture and accessories look extra special when paired with shining metals. Bring in a brass table base here and a metal coffee table there, and your space develops depth and drama. We’re partial to gold because it warms up a room so beautifully but polished nickel and chrome compliment jewel tones just like platinum.

Pair Two Jewels Together

What’s better than one jewel in a room? Two! Consider pairing two gorgeous jewel toned colors together to create a high impact color palette that adds richness to a light, bright living room. Here, we wove elements of sapphire and topaz together, with plenty of gold and velvet.

This color palette has the added bonus of being complementary colors, meaning that they’re opposite each other on the color wheel. If you know your color wheel, you know that because they’re opposites, they bring out the best in each other creating a high-contrast, energizing color palette.
