Dear How to Decorate,
Each month, I admire Ballard Designs’ rooms when I receive my new catalog. My desire is to give my wide open Great Room that fantastic Ballard feel. I love the look of traditional pieces without being stuffy.
I am struggling with furniture placement in my awkward space. The room is large but has four main work arounds: the front entry door, a spiral staircase that leads to an open loft, a corner fireplace and, of course, my husband’s big screen. We love our Grey sectional but we are lost when it comes to choosing a placing furniture in this space.
Your help is greatly appreciated!
Best,
Ashley
Ashley,
Sometimes planning around the architectural elements of a space can seem almost impossible, but we think you are headed in the right direction. We have put together a layout based on the measurements you submitted.
The basic layout you have already created seems to be the best way to handle your space. We have embellished the plan with additional pieces that would help in the overall flow of the room’s style and complete the areas already created.
As you can see from the plan, we recommend the sectional next to the sofa, add a console table at the door. We like the idea of our Durham Console. This piece will give you a place for a lamp along with a place for keys and cell phone. Tucked next to the sectional and console table is our Metallic Garden seat, offering a perfect place for drinks.
For a coffee table, consider adding our Durham Bunching Tables instead of one large piece. Hang our Gold Dust Giclee on the large wall, transitioning your smaller pieces of art above the console table. Bring in a small ottoman for that much needed extra seating and finish off with great lamps and additional side tables.
In front of the fireplace, we suggest pairing another chair with your love seat. Incorporate a round coffee table and then nestle a couple of our Leather Pouf Ottomans in graphite!
Another recommendation to help with the finished look of the room is to delineate each space with a rug. A great option for this is our Grasscloth Natural Fiber Rug. Consider selecting the same style rug for both areas.
Adding a few key pieces in the right finishes and cohesive colors will bring harmony to your space. Now you can sit back and enjoy your room!
Happy Decorating!
