Decorating Dilemma: Grace’s Family Room

Decorating a long narrow family room

Decorating Dilemmas is a weekly column in which our stylists answer your design questions, so you can tackle your home decorating project with complete confidence.

Dear How to Decorate,

I’m not sure how to layout our family room! It’s very long, and if we keep something similar to the configuration, in the rendering, not sure what to do with the area behind the couch. We want lots of seating so were leaning toward a sectional, but we’re not sure what to do. I’d like ideas on seating, size for the coffee table, and the size of rug that would work. I’m also looking for a new media stand!

Thanks!

Grace

Dear Grace,

Thank you for the opportunity to create a beautiful and functional space for you. The design suggestions we stated below are based on the layout you planned for your family room which we think will work well!

Starting with a rug will provide the ground work for your layout and create the color palette for the room. Our Allegro Hand Hooked Rug, in an 8×10 size, has a soft medallion design with warm colors of Dijon, putty, and hints of a gray-blue.

The ultra comfy 3 Piece Baldwin Sofa offers a large amount of seating and provides easy care by covering it a washable Off-White Twill Slipcover. The round shape of the Bornova Coffee Table is perfect for sectionals and has a unique textured latticework. Behind the exposed back of the sofa, position a rustic black Ananda Serving Table giving stylish horizontal space. Now, push two Upholstered Cubes, with Sandalwood Ticking Stripe Slipcovers, under the Ananda for additional seating when needed. Always remember to add plenty of lighting — our Malia Seeded Glass Lamp in Amber will give a fabulous low profile light source along with a subtle punch of color. The Patton Metal Artifact Floor Lamp will give you additional lighting on the opposite side of the sectional.

The Belgard Media Console is great as a new TV stand. The doors can hide away any unsightly boxes and cables. On either side of the media cabinet two Larkin Swivel Gliders upholstered in Sunbrella Easy Care Trellis Taupe will allow you to effortlessly turn around the room.

Since your fireplace wall has a slider door and a window, create symmetry by hanging drapery panels just below the crown molding. By framing both openings with the same treatment, your space will feel a bit more unified.

Happy Decorating,
